O atrakcji

The Paphos District Archaeological Museum is the necessary companion to the Archaeological Park: where the Park gives you the city in situ, the museum gives you what came out of the ground. A modest building on Grivas Digenis Avenue, opened 1964 and expanded since, it presents in five chronological rooms the archaeology of the Paphos district from the Neolithic to the Roman period.

The strengths are specific. Room 1 covers Neolithic and Chalcolithic Paphos including finds from Lemba and Kissonerga. Room 2 has the Bronze Age — particularly fine red polished ware from Souskiou tombs. Room 3 is the Aphrodite room: terracotta votives, jewellery and small bronzes from the sanctuary at Palaepaphos (Kouklia), where the goddess was actually worshipped — the contrast with the romantic mythology of the rock at Petra tou Romiou is informative, with the original aniconic baetyl (sacred unworked stone) of the early Aphrodite cult on display. Room 4 holds Roman sculpture and architectural pieces, including statuary from the House of Theseus. Room 5 covers the Early Christian and Byzantine period.

The museum is small enough to walk in 60-90 minutes but the case content rewards a slower pace, particularly the Aphrodite room and the terracottas. Signage is in Greek and English. The museum is one of the more thoughtful regional archaeological collections on the island, and pairs well with the Archaeological Park as the necessary complementary visit.

Insider tips. Tickets are inexpensive (around 2.50 EUR). The museum is rarely crowded — a good escape from the Paphos summer sun. The Aphrodite case (Room 3) repays a careful look — the sequence of her cult image evolution from aniconic stone to fully figurative is unusual to see laid out so plainly. Photography is permitted without flash. Closed Mondays.

Combinations. Pair with the Paphos Archaeological Park and the Tombs of the Kings for a complete Paphos archaeology trio. Add Palaepaphos at Kouklia for the Aphrodite cult site itself, and the Paphos Byzantine Museum for the post-pagan continuity. A complete Paphos cultural day.

Bring. Small notebook for archaeology fans; the museum is air-conditioned, so no special prep needed. When. Tuesday-Friday 08:00-16:00, weekend mornings. The Paphos Archaeological Museum is the kind of small-city museum where the local material is allowed to speak for itself, without the showmanship of Nicosia or the spectacle of the Park.
