Solanki Akrotiri — the second flamingo lake of Cyprus, quieter and closer to Limassol

Most guides mention Larnaka Salt Lake as the only flamingo lake of Cyprus. This is incorrect. 40 km west of Larnaka, close to Limassol, lies Lake Akrotiri — a larger reservoir (approx. 14 km²), with an identical flamingo population, but without the crowds of tourists and without airport planes in the background. For residents of Limassol, it is their own "version of Larnaka" — quieter, less touristy and just as beautiful.

Location and geographical context

Lake Akrotiri is located on the Cape Akrotiri (known as "Cat's Paw" on maps of the shape of Cyprus) — a peninsula extending south of Limassol. GPS center of the lake: 34.5755° N, 32.9706° E.

Important: Most of the territory of Cape Akrotiri belongs to the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia — British enclaves remaining after the 1960 decolonization. Access to parts of the territory is restricted. However, the lake and the ornithological trails are accessible to civilians throughout the year.

Getting from Limassol:

  • Road B6 west, turn south onto the Akrotiri peninsula after Kourion
  • Alternatively: Road along the coast through Agios Tychonas and Ypsonas
  • GPS parking at the eastern shore: 34.5884° N, 32.9880° E
  • Distance from Limassol city center: approx. 20 km, 25–30 minutes

Public transport: None. Own car or taxi.

Comparison: Akrotiri vs. Larnaka

| Criterion | Akrotiri | Larnaka | |-----------|----------|---------| | Distance from airport | 100 km (from Larnaka airport) | 3 km | | Tourist crowds | Small | Large | | Infrastructure | Minimal | Good (platform, toilets) | | Number of flamingos | Similar | Similar | | Coastal woodland | Yes (Eucalyptus grove) | No | | Availability in winter | Good | Good | | Mosque for photography | No | Yes |

Season and flamingo numbers

Pink flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) arrive in Akrotiri in October–November, peaking in December–February, and depart in March–April. Numbers are similar to Larnaka: 5000–50000 depending on the year and water level.

In exceptionally good winters, Akrotiri and Larnaka "exchange" flocks — flamingos fly between the lakes. Sometimes, one year Akrotiri has more birds than Larnaka (when the water is higher in Akrotiri = more brine shrimp).

Peak numbers: January–February. Best year of the last decade: 2018/19 — approximately 60000+ flamingos at the same time in Akrotiri.

Lady's Mile and Akrotiri Birdwatching Trail

Lady's Mile is a beach on the eastern edge of the Akrotiri peninsula — a popular beach for Limassol residents. From the beach runs an informal dirt track along the reservoir to the west.

RSPB/Cyprus Nature Trails Trail: Marked 5 km birdwatching trail around the lake. Starts at the information board GPS: 34.5939° N, 33.0048° E. Time: 1.5–2 hours. Surface: Dirt path, reeds in places. Good shoes.

Birdwatching observatory: There is a small observation building on the trail (permanent installation with binoculars/telescope holes). Key available at the trail entrance between 8:00–16:00.

Eucalyptus Forest — a unique element of Akrotiri

The eastern shore of the lake is covered with a multi-hectare eucalyptus forest planted by the British in the 20th century. The forest is unique to Cyprus — Australian eucalyptus trees (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) form a dense canopy with a characteristic aroma.

In the forests of Akrotiri, the following winter and nest:

  • Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia sarda): East Mediterranean endemic
  • Cypriot Tit (Parus ater cypriotes): Local subspecies of the Eurasian tit, endemic to Cyprus

The eucalyptus trees in the breeding season (April–June) are full of birds. In the morning, the forest literally sings.

Other birds — complete winter list

Akrotiri is on the migration route from Eastern Europe to Eastern Africa. The following are observed throughout the year:

Summer:

  • Fishhawk hunting over the lake
  • Red-rumped Swallow in mass migrations spring/autumn

Winter:

  • Pink flamingo — be alert!
  • Smew, Goosander, Common Merganser — diving ducks
  • Yellow-legged Gull and Mediterranean Gull — flocks over the lake
  • White Stork (Ciconia ciconia): Migration IX–X, sometimes winters in favorable weather

Throughout the year:

  • Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus): Hunts over the reeds
  • Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea): Near the reeds in the evenings

Akrotiri Lore — cat colony

Lake Akrotiri is known throughout the ornithological world for... cats. Wild cats (Felis silvestris catus) live in colonies along the lake's edge — thousands of individuals for years. It's a paradox: in a place where we protect the flamingo, its natural predators (cats hunt birds) live nearby.

The CTO and ornithologists have tried to control the cat population through sterilization (TNR — trap/neuter/return program). Results: slow.

The cats are tame with people — they approach tourists on the trail. They look funny against the backdrop of flamingos in the water.

Lady's Mile Beach — swimming after birdwatching

After birdwatching, Lady's Mile beach offers swimming and relaxation:

  • Length: approx. 5 km of sand
  • Infrastructure: Several bars, sunbeds 3–4 EUR, parking
  • Water: Clean, shallow at the edge, good for children
  • Crowds: Smaller than Ayia Napa or Protaras

The beach is popular with soldiers from the British base and Limassol residents — a local, less touristy atmosphere.

Combining with other attractions

  • Kourion (10 km west): Ancient theatre on a cliff
  • Governor's Beach (15 km east): Black sand and white cliffs
  • Limassol city center (20 km): Promenade, museum, pier
  • Old Village of Agios Tychonas (8 km): Picturesque, traditional, good lunch
