Diving in Cyprus for Beginners — 6 PADI Schools with Polish Instructors

Cyprus is one of the best places in Europe for your first dive. Warm water (22–28°C for 7 months), high visibility (10–25 m), gentle waves at most advanced dive sites, and a short distance from the hotel to the sea — ideal conditions for a beginner. A growing Polish diaspora in Cyprus and great interest from Polish tourists have led to the appearance of Polish-speaking instructors in several of the largest diving bases.

Why Cyprus is Good for Your First Dive

Water Temperature: 22–28°C (May–October). With such warm water, thermal anxiety and discomfort are minimal — beginners can focus on technique, not the cold.

Visibility: 10–20 m under standard conditions. In murky water (after rain, in winter) it drops to 5–8 m. Good visibility = less stress, better experience.

Currents: The Mediterranean Sea near Cyprus has minimal tidal currents. This is important for beginners — no risk of being “swept” away from the site.

Dive Sites: The Zenobia wreck, Cape Greco caves, cliffs near Paphos — diverse sites, accessible for different levels.

Weather: 340 sunny days a year. Days with waves that prevent diving: a dozen or so per year, mainly in winter.

What Your First Dive Looks Like

Discover Scuba Diving (DSD): This is not a certification course — it’s a one-time diving experience under the supervision of an instructor. No license, no certificate at the end.

Standard program:

  1. Briefing ashore (1–2 hours): Basics of equipment operation, underwater signals, techniques for equalizing pressure (Valsalva), what to do in case of problems
  2. Shallow diving in a pool or calm sea (max 6 m): Learning to breathe through a regulator, equalizing, moving around
  3. Open water diving (max 12 m with DSD): Real sea under 1:1 supervision

Duration: 3–4 hours total. Price in Cyprus: 50–80 EUR (depending on location and operator).

What you get: A DSD participation certificate (not valid as a license). You can continue the OW course at the same base.

Certification Courses — PADI vs. CMAS vs. SSI

In Cyprus, PADI dominates — the largest global diving organization. CMAS (European) and SSI are less common, but certifications are mutually recognized.

PADI Open Water Diver (OW):

  • Minimum age: 10 years (with depth restrictions to 12 m)
  • Course duration: 3–4 days (or 5 days at a slower pace)
  • What you learn: Theory of pressure/depth, equipment, safety techniques, 4 certification dives
  • Certification: Valid for life, recognized worldwide
  • Price in Cyprus: 350–450 EUR (including: manual, rental equipment, 4 dives)

After OW:

  • Depth: Up to 18 m independently, up to 40 m with an instructor
  • Access: Most commercial dive sites in Cyprus (including the Zenobia’s surface portion)

PADI Advanced Open Water (AOW):

  • After OW, 2 days, 5 themed dives
  • Depth: Up to 30 m
  • Price: 250–320 EUR

PADI Rescue Diver:

  • After AOW, 3–4 days
  • Learning underwater rescue techniques
  • Required by many employers in the diving industry

E-learning vs. Traditional Course

PADI offers the option of taking the theory online (PADI eLearning) before traveling to Cyprus. Advantages:

  • You learn at your own pace in Polish (PADI eLearning available in PL)
  • Only the practical part (pool + open water dives) on site
  • Saves 1 day of the course
  • Slightly higher total price, but more flexible

Ask the chosen base if they accept prior eLearning — most do.

Safety and Insurance

DAN (Divers Alert Network): Insurance dedicated to divers. Covers hyperbaric treatment (decompression chamber), evacuation, treatment for diving accidents. Price: approx. 40–80 USD/year for annual insurance.

Decompression Chamber in Cyprus: The chamber is at Nicosia General Hospital. In case of a diving accident, call 112 and inform them that you need a chamber.

DSD with a child: PADI DSD from age 8 (with restrictions). OW course from age 10. Parents must sign consent forms.

Best Time for a Diving Course

May–June and September–October: The best compromise: warm water (22–25°C), good visibility, calm sea, fewer crowds than in August.

July–August: The warmest water (26–28°C), but bases are overcrowded — book at least 2 weeks in advance.

Winter (November–March): Water 17–18°C — requires a 5mm full wetsuit. Fewer people, lower prices, but less comfortable for beginners.
