Kitesurfing and windsurfing in Cyprus — Mazotos, Curium, Lady's Mile. When the wind blows

Kitesurfing and Windsurfing in Cyprus — Mazotos, Curium, Lady's Mile. When the Wind Blows

Cyprus isn't Tarifa or Rhodes — it's not the epicenter of European kitesurfing. But it has several consistent windy "windows" and places where the wind is regular enough to build a local kite and windsurf scene. For kiteboarders seeking the Mediterranean with a combination of sun, warm water, and moderate conditions — Cyprus is worth considering, especially for a beginner's course or a quieter season outside the European peak.

Cyprus's Windy Climate — Baseline Data

Cyprus doesn't have an Atlantic exposure. Mediterranean winds are:

Meltemi (Etesian winds): Seasonal wind from the north and northwest, active June–August. On Cyprus, it arrives with a weakening compared to the Dodecanese and Crete — but still delivers 15–25 knots several times a week.

Tramontana (Poyraz): Wind from the northeast, winter. Cool, can reach 30+ knots. Active mainly along the eastern coast.

Sea breeze: Local, afternoon, summer. Operates 11:00–18:00, 12–20 knots. Most predictable.

Sirocco (Sharav): Hot dry wind from Africa/Sahara, sporadic. Very fine sand in the air, visibility drops. Not for kitesurfing.

Mazotos Beach — Main Kitesurfing Spot

GPS: 34.8012° N, 33.4721° E. Mazotos Beach is located 20 km east of Limassol, about 35 km west of Larnaca. Mazotos village is off the A1 highway.

Conditions:

  • Wind: Best sea breeze afternoon (12:00–18:00), regularly 15–25 knots in summer
  • Direction: Southwest to west — onshore (blowing from the sea towards the shore) or sideshore
  • Bottom: Sandy, shallow (50–80 cm at 10–20 m from the shore) — safe for learning
  • Waves: Minimal under these wind conditions
  • Season: April–November (summer is best for learning due to water temperature)

Kitesurfing Schools:

  • Cyprus Kite Club (on Mazotos Beach): IKO (International Kiteboarding Organisation) courses for beginners and advanced riders. Course prices: 250–350 EUR for a 3-day beginner's course.
  • Kitesurf Cyprus (Mazotos): Second center, equipment rental, courses in season

Equipment Rental: Kite + board: 50–70 EUR/day (requires own IKO or VDWS certificate) Without a license: Only with an instructor

For Beginners: 3-hour lesson with an instructor: 80–120 EUR. After the IKO Level 2 (4 days, about 300–400 EUR) course, you can go solo.

Curium Beach (Governor's Beach area)

GPS: 34.6560° N, 32.8620° E — near Curium village, 20 km west of Limassol

Conditions:

  • Wind: Sea breeze from the south and southwest, regularly 10–20 knots in summer
  • Character: More suited for windsurfing (sailboard) than kite — calmer conditions
  • Bottom: Sandy-rocky

Several windsurfing schools operate seasonally at Curium. Windsurfing board and sail rental: 25–40 EUR/hour or 80–120 EUR/day.

Level: Good for beginner windsurfers (1.5h lesson: 40–60 EUR). For kiteboarders — the wind is too soft most days.

Lady's Mile Beach (Akrotiri, Limassol)

GPS: 34.6145° N, 32.9969° E — near Akrotiri village, south of Limassol

Conditions:

  • One of the best "windy" beaches near Limassol
  • Wind from the west: 15–25 knots several times a week in season
  • Long beach (5 km) — large maneuvering freedom
  • Waves: Up to 1 m in stronger winds — conditions for wave riding (advanced)

Schools: Lady's Mile Watersports (seasonal) — kite and windsurfing.

When to Go and Wind Data

Historical data for Larnaca and Limassol (source: Windy.com, Windguru.cz):

| Month | Avg. Wind Speed (knots) | Days with 15+ kts wind | |---------|------------------------------|----------------------| | January | 9 | 6 | | February | 10 | 7 | | March | 11 | 8 | | April | 10 | 7 | | May | 12 | 9 | | June | 13 | 10 | | July | 15 | 12 | | August | 15 | 12 | | September | 13 | 10 | | October | 11 | 8 | | November | 10 | 7 | | December | 8 | 5 |

Best season for kitesurfing: July–August (meltemi) and September (still good wind, fewer crowds, water temperature 26°C).

Windguru and Windy — How to Read Forecasts for Cyprus

For kite and windsurfing, the forecast is more important than for sunbathing:

Windguru.cz: Select the spot "Mazotos Beach Cyprus" or "Larnaka Bay". Look for: Wind 15–25 kts (for kite), direction SW–W (sideshore/onshore at Mazotos).

Windy.com: "Wind" layer with colors from blue (calm) to red (storm). For kite: green-yellow (12–20 kts).

Kpax.gr: Local Cypriot weather service with data from automatic stations at beaches.

Kitesurfing Equipment — What to Bring, What to Buy

Kite: Size depends on your weight and wind speed. For Cypriot conditions (15–25 kts): 9–12 m² kite for a 70–80 kg person. With 80+ kg: 12–14 m².

Board: Twintip (bi-directional) for beginners and flat water riding. Directional (for waves) for advanced riders at Lady's Mile.

Bars: Can be carried in the luggage compartment of the airplane (in a kite bag – 23 kg check-in). Kite and bar usually fit. Board: Either in the cabin (if <115 cm), or as excess baggage (10–30 EUR supplement depending on the airline).

Buying in Cyprus: Several kite and windsurf shops in Larnaca and Limassol. Prices similar to Western Europe (+10% due to import).

Safety and Regulations

Zones: Kite zones are marked. Kiting on normal swimming beaches is prohibited (risk of accidents). Mazotos has a designated launch/land zone.

Offshore wind: Rarely occurs in Cyprus, but with Tramontana (N/NE) it can happen. Offshore wind = dangerous for beginners. Always check the wind direction before entering the water.

Lifeguard: Some schools have a pontoon rescue. Always learn the "self-rescue" procedure (how to collapse the kite in the water and swim to shore).

Insurance: Kite and windsurfing are not covered by standard travel insurance. Additional sports insurance (e.g., through PKRA, IKO federations) is recommended.

Other Water Sports at Windy Beaches

The same beaches as for kite also offer:

  • SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard): Mazotos in calm conditions in the morning
  • Windsurfing: Lady's Mile Beach — a calmer wind angle than Mazotos
  • Flyboard: A point operates at Lady's Mile (water jetboard, 100 EUR/20 min)
  • Surfing: Cyprus doesn't have good surfing waves — only Kato Pafos with a westerly wind has minimal waves

Apartments in Mazotos or Larnaca near the windy beach on CyprusBooker — filter "Larnaka" or "Mazotos". Many private rentals directly on the beach, off-season prices from 35 EUR.
