Most Korakas and Mile Cliffs — a Cape Greco section for sunrise photographers
"Most Korakas" is a natural limestone arch on the Cape Greco cliff — limestone sculpted by thousands of years of waves creates an arch 8 meters wide, opening onto turquoise water 20 meters below. Photographers from across Cyprus come here before dawn to capture the sunrise with the first light falling through the arch opening. Below are the details: GPS, best time, technique, and what you haven't found in other guides.
Location and Access
GPS for Mostu Korakas: 34.9668° N, 34.0697° E
Access:
- From Ayia Napa: Drive along B16 road east towards Cape Greco, after 6 km turn south following the Cape Greco sign. Continue for 1.5 km on a dirt road to the parking lot near Agios Anargyroi chapel.
- From the parking lot: A 600 m hiking trail to the viewpoint above Korakas Bridge.
GPS of the parking lot (starting point): 34.9712° N, 34.0762° E
The dirt road is passable by a regular passenger car — a 4x4 is not necessary. Exercise caution on slippery sand after rain.
Driving time from Ayia Napa: 20–25 minutes. Driving time from Protaras: 15–20 minutes.
Access hours: Forest park area — no restrictions. Night access is possible, but the dirt road without headlights after dark: exercise caution.
Most Korakas — architecture of limestone nature
The rock arch (Stone Bridge) is one of several hundred natural arches that have formed in the Mediterranean Sea basin. Cypriot arches are relatively new geologically — Miocene limestone (5–10 million years) is soft and susceptible to marine erosion.
Formation mechanism: Waves penetrate through vertical cracks in the limestone, gradually widening the cavities. When a cavity meets on two sides — a tunnel is formed. When the ceiling of the tunnel collapses — an arch remains. Most Korakas is in the arch phase — the ceiling above the tunnel is still holding. In a few thousand years (on a geological scale) it will also collapse.
Arch dimensions: Span approximately 8 meters, arch height at the keystone approximately 3 meters above the platform, depth below approximately 20 meters.
Stability: The arch is stable, but the limestone is brittle. Climbing the arch is prohibited — risk of breaking off.
Sunrise — why Korakas is the ideal location
Cape Greco juts out to the east — it is the most easterly point of the island with a view of the open Levant Sea. The sun rises over this sea, from the direction of Syria (southeast in summer) or Anatolia (east).
Most Korakas is oriented to the east — the sunrise is visible through the arch opening almost exactly on axis (the difference depends on the time of year: ±20°).
Best date: 2 weeks before and after the summer solstice (June) — the sun rises furthest northeast and is most visible through the arch opening. March and September — the sun rises east, less ideally through the arch.
Sunrise time at Cape Greco:
- June: 5:45
- July: 6:00
- August: 6:20
- September: 6:40
- October: 7:00
Arrive 30–45 minutes before sunrise.
Photographic technique for sunrise
Position: The path running along the cliff above the arch has several points:
- Frontal (approx. 15 m from the arch): The arch against the rising sun — a classic shot. Risk of sun flare — expose for the shadow of the arch or HDR.
- Side (3–5 m from the arch): The arch in profile with water in the background. Better exposure compromise.
- Low (half-kneeling or lying on the rocks): The arch viewed from below with water underneath — an "gateway to the abyss" effect.
Equipment:
- 70–200 mm telephoto lens: For compressing perspective (arch + water + horizon)
- 14–24 mm wide-angle lens: For full dramatic effect of the arch in the foreground
- GND (graduated neutral density) filter: To balance exposure of sky vs. rocks in shadow
- Tripod: Essential for sunrise photography (long exposure)
- Remote shutter release: To avoid camera shake
Editing: Adobe Lightroom or Capture One. With RAW images, you can extract details from both the shadows (arch) and the highlights (sky) in one shot.
Mile Cliffs — what they are and where
"Mile Cliffs" is an unofficial name for a section of cliff approximately 1 km from Most Korakas towards Konnos Bay. Limestone cliffs 15–30 meters high, without formal attractions, with a view of the open sea. A hiking trail runs along the edge.
Why worth visiting:
- Lack of tourists (a few steps from Korakas, but few go further)
- Cliff edge with varied erosion — every 50 m is a different rock shape
- View of Konnos Bay from the east (you can't see Konnos from there, you only see it after 800 m of the trail)
- Sunset falling on the cliffs from the west — flowing gold on white limestone
Underwater exploration near Korakas — for divers
The underwater part of Most Korakas is accessible to divers with certification. Several diving schools from Protaras and Ayia Napa offer "Cape Greco Cave Dive" as their popular dive site:
- Depth: 5–15 m depending on the section
- Difficulty: Advanced Open Water or equivalent
- Underwater visibility: 10–20 m
- Fauna: Moray eels in crevices, groupers, octopuses, soft corals on walls
Guided dive price: 40–60 EUR/person.
For snorkelers: The section near the rock platforms (without going under the arch) is accessible for good swimmers with fins. Rocks and crevices at a depth of 1–5 m.
Sunrise vs. sunset at Cape Greco
Sunrise: Most Korakas. The sun rises over the sea, through the arch, a dramatic effect.
Sunset: The western side of Cape Greco and the cliffs near the lighthouse. The sun disappearing behind Protaras and Ayia Napa (from the east — i.e. behind your back) illuminates the western cliffs in gold and orange. Alternatively: driving from Cape Greco to Ayia Napa, the viewpoint on B16 road (on the left when driving west) has a view of the western sun.
