Konnos Bay — the most beautiful cove of Cape Greco without the crowds. Getting there and tips
On the eastern edge of Cyprus, a few kilometers from Protaras and 15 km from the center of Ayia Napa, lies Konnos Bay — a small cove surrounded by limestone cliffs, with water so clear that boats look as if they are floating in the air. Officially, it's part of Cape Greco National Park, which means restrictions for hotel investors and ecosystem protection. Unofficially: it's one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, and worth knowing.
Location and Getting There
GPS: 34.9643° N, 34.0623° E. Konnos Bay is located off B16 road, which runs along the coast of Cape Greco.
From Protaras (15 km): The road is entirely asphalt, with a driving time of approximately 20 minutes. Leave the center of Protaras heading south, towards Cape Greco. Signposts for Konnos Bay appear at the intersection near Grecian Park hotel.
From Ayia Napa (15 km): The road through Cape Greco — asphalt all the way, approximately 25 minutes. Head in the direction of Protaras/B16.
Parking: Paid parking at the descent to the beach — 2–3 EUR per day. Capacity of approximately 100 vehicles. In season (August) the parking lot is full before 10:30. Alternative: parking at Grecian Park hotel (approx. 600 m uphill) — free for hotel guests, check current policy for others.
Public Transport: Bus 101 Ayia Napa – Protaras stops on request at the intersection on Cape Greco (2 km from the pedestrian beach). No direct connection to Konnos.
Why Konnos is less crowded than Nissi
Several factors protect Konnos from mass tourism:
- The road — although asphalt, it is winding and has poor bus connections
- National park status — no possibility of building large hotels on the beach
- Small capacity — the beach comfortably accommodates approximately 200–300 people
- No loud music — park regulations prohibit loudspeakers
In July–August it is still crowded, but crowded here means something completely different than at Nissi.
Beach and Water Characteristics
The cove is shaped like a horseshoe, with a shoreline of approximately 250 meters and a beach width of 15–25 meters. The seabed is sandy with rocky patches on the sides. Water: 3–5 m visibility even during peak season. Depth: from 0.3 m at the edge to 2 m within 40 meters, then it rises quickly.
Water colors: Cyan blue at the edge transitions into deep turquoise — an effect of the combination of white sandy bottom and limestone rocks. Early afternoon (11:00–13:00) provides the best water photographs.
Blue Flag for years. Lifeguards present in season (staffed post at the descent).
Snorkeling and Diving
Konnos is one of the better snorkeling areas near Ayia Napa:
- Rocks on the left side of the cove: bream, moray eels, hermit crabs, sea lilies
- Underwater coves on the right headland: population of small fish (salpa, parrotfish)
- Snorkeling depth: 0–5 m near the side rocks
Organized diving does not depart directly from Konnos Bay due to boat size — diving schools from Protaras and Ayia Napa offer the "Konnos" dive-site with boat access from the sea side.
Sunbeds and Infrastructure
Sunbeds: approximately 3 EUR/person, two rows in the central part of the beach. Umbrellas included.
Beach bar: one small bar at the descent — water, cold drinks, ice cream. Limited food (fries, sandwiches). Restaurants are worth looking for in Protaras (15 min) or at Grecian Park hotel.
Showers: 2 showers at the descent (free). Toilets at the bar.
Accessibility for people with disabilities: Descent by stairs (approx. 40 steps) — no alternative for wheelchairs. The beach itself is accessible on sand, but access is difficult.
Best Time to Visit
- Morning: 8:30–10:00 — calm water, almost no people, ideal for snorkeling
- Afternoon: Hottest, brightest water colors, but crowded
- Late Afternoon: 16:30–18:30 — some tourists leave, water still warm, sun behind the photographer
The sunset from Konnos faces east — the sunrise, however, is a spectacle over the Cape Greco headland (2 km of dirt road further, Korakas bridge).
