O atrakcji

Ledra Street is the principal pedestrianised shopping artery of Nicosia, running from the Eleftheria Square at the southern entrance to the walled city, north through the heart of old Nicosia to the Ledra Street Crossing — the most-used checkpoint between the Greek-Cypriot south and the Turkish-Cypriot north. It is the busiest commercial street in the capital, walked by tens of thousands of Nicosians and visitors daily, and the street that most concentrates the modern face of Nicosia retail.

The shopping mix runs from international high-street brands (Zara, H&M, Mango, the standard chains, several international shoe and accessory brands) through long-established Cypriot family-run shops (gold and silver jewellery, traditional textiles, fabrics) to small specialty shops (books, music, cosmetics, mobile phones, perfumes). Cafés and gelato parlours fill the gaps; outdoor seating in summer extends well into the pedestrian zone. The northern end of the street, near the crossing, has more traditional shops and the lower-touristic feel.

The Ledra Street Crossing is a unique feature. The pedestrian-only checkpoint, opened in 2008 after thirty years of closure, allows residents and visitors to walk freely between south and north Nicosia with appropriate documentation (passport for non-EU; ID card for EU citizens). The crossing itself is a 50-metre walk between south Greek-Cypriot police and north Turkish-Cypriot police checkpoints — a strange, unexpectedly emotional experience for first-time visitors. The northern side opens into the Turkish-Cypriot pedestrian street, with its own distinct retail and atmosphere.

Insider tips. Allow 60-90 minutes to walk the full street. Saturday afternoon is busiest; weekday afternoons are calmer. The crossing is open daily roughly 07:00-22:00; bring your passport. Crossing to the north and back takes about 30 minutes including the queue (longer at busy times). For shopping bargains, the cross-streets feeding into Ledra (Onasagorou, Lykourgou) often have better-value local brands. Cafés and gelaterias along the street are pricier than the side-streets.

Combinations. Pair Ledra Street with Laiki Geitonia (immediately east — the restored old-town district), the Archbishop's Palace complex (10 minutes' walk east — Cathedral, Byzantine Museum, Folk Art Museum), the Cyprus Museum (15 minutes' walk west), the Venetian walls (the street is bisected by the walls), and an evening at one of the side-street tavernas. A complete walled-city Nicosia day.

Bring. Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and hat in summer, casual evening wear if continuing to dinner, passport for the crossing, daypack for purchases. When. Year-round; cool months are best for unhurried walking. Late afternoon and evening for the best atmosphere. Ledra Street is the everyday commercial face of Nicosia — a street that actually works as a city centre.
