Archangelos Michael Church in the Trypiotis quarter of Nicosia old town is a small but architecturally and artistically important 17th-century Greek-Orthodox church, one of the finest of the Ottoman-period churches that survive in the walled city. The church is dedicated to the Archangel Michael and is also known as Trypiotis after the surrounding neighbourhood. It was built in 1695 on the foundations of an earlier Byzantine church and is still an active parish.
The exterior is plain limestone with a simple gabled roof and a small belfry — Ottoman-period restrictions kept Christian church exteriors deliberately understated. The interior is the surprise: a single-aisled vaulted nave with an elaborate carved-and-gilded walnut iconostasis (one of the finest of the Cypriot post-Byzantine school, with figurative panels, baroque-influenced ornament, and gold leaf), a 17th-century cycle of wall paintings showing scenes from the life of the Archangel and the Old Testament, and the church's principal venerated icon — a 17th-century Archangel Michael in armour, with substantial silver votive offerings attached.
The church is in the old town near Faneromeni Square and the Archbishop's Palace, an easy stop on any Nicosia walled-city itinerary. The neighbouring Trypiotis quarter has several restored 18th-19th century stone houses and the small Trypiotis market street.
Insider tips. Open mornings and late afternoons (closed at midday); modest dress essential. Photography is generally not permitted. Allow 30 minutes for a careful look. Free entry; donations welcome. The church is small enough that a single visit takes in the iconostasis, the wall paintings, and the venerated icon.
Combinations. Pair with Faneromeni Square and Church (5 minutes' walk — the larger central church of the quarter), Laiki Geitonia (5 minutes — restored old-town district), the Archbishop's Palace complex (10 minutes — Cathedral of Saint John, Byzantine Museum, Folk Art Museum), and Ledra Street with the Green-Line crossing. A complete walled-city Nicosia day.
Bring. Modest dress, small change for candle and donation, comfortable shoes for old-town walking. When. Year-round; cool months are best for combining with the wider walled-city walk. Avoid Sunday morning liturgy unless attending. Archangelos Michael is a small jewel-box church in the heart of old Nicosia and a quietly important piece of post-Byzantine art history.
