The Leventis Gallery is the principal fine-art museum in the south of Cyprus, opened in 2014 in a restored neoclassical mansion at 27 Leventis Street in central Nicosia. The collection consists primarily of the private holdings of the late Anastasios G. Leventis, a Cypriot philanthropist whose foundation has supported cultural preservation across the island for decades. The strength of the gallery is European 19th- and early 20th-century painting alongside Greek and Cypriot works of the same period — a serious second-tier collection rather than a pantheon, but of consistently high quality.
The collection is organised in three sections corresponding to the gallery's named floors. The Paris Collection (200+ works of European painting from the 17th to 20th centuries) is the largest, with paintings by Boucher, Chardin, Boudin, Renoir, Pissarro, Monet (a small Impressionist group), Soutine and Chagall. The Greek Collection (around 100 works) covers 19th- and 20th-century Greek painting. The Cyprus Collection focuses on Cypriot artists of the same era. The displays are clear, well lit, and the wall texts are bilingual and informative.
The building itself is a quiet jewel — restored neoclassical, with an inner garden, a small café-restaurant, and a museum shop. The architecture is the work of Pierides Architects of Athens.
Insider tips. Allow 90-120 minutes for a careful visit. Free admission since opening. Photography is generally permitted without flash. The gallery is closed Mondays. The café in the inner garden is excellent for a coffee or light lunch in cooler months.
Combinations. Pair with the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia (run by the same foundation; complementary social history collection, 5 minutes' walk), the Cyprus Museum (10 minutes' walk), the Archbishop's Palace complex, and a Laiki Geitonia walk. The complete cultural Nicosia day.
Bring. Comfortable shoes, notebook for art fans, layered clothing (the building is air-conditioned). When. Tuesday-Sunday; cool months are best for combining with old-town walking. Late afternoon visits often have the best light through the building's windows. The Leventis Gallery is a dignified contribution to Mediterranean fine-art collections and a quiet contrast to the louder antiquity-focused museums.
