O atrakcji

The Cyprus Folk Art Museum sits in the restored medieval Gothic-period building on the south side of the Archbishop's Palace courtyard in central Nicosia — a building that began as a 14th-century Lusignan monastery, was modified in the Ottoman period, and now houses one of the finest folk-art collections on the island. The collection covers traditional Cypriot rural and urban material culture from the 19th and early 20th centuries, with strong holdings in textiles, ceramics, tools, and domestic objects.

The exhibition is arranged across the building's three floors. The ground floor covers traditional crafts: pottery, copperwork, woodcarving, weaving, including a working loom and a complete reconstructed potter's workshop. The first floor focuses on textiles and costumes — the famous Lefkara lace (UNESCO Intangible Heritage), embroidered linen, traditional bridal costumes from across the regions of Cyprus, woven kilims and rugs, embroidered church vestments. The upper floor presents domestic life: kitchens, looms, agricultural tools, the traditional Cypriot wedding chest (sentouki).

The building itself is part of the visit — original Gothic vaulting in the lower rooms, traditional Cypriot wooden ceilings on the upper floors, a small inner courtyard with a stone fountain. The Society of Cypriot Studies, which curates the collection, has done patient and unfussy work; this is a museum where the objects speak rather than the design.

Insider tips. Allow 90 minutes for a careful visit. Entrance is around 2 EUR. Photography is generally permitted without flash. The museum is closed Sundays. Combine with the Byzantine Museum next door (different focus, similar quality of curation). The Archbishop's Palace courtyard itself is worth a few minutes.

Combinations. The Archbishop's Palace complex is itself a half-day: Folk Art Museum, Byzantine Museum, Cathedral of Saint John, palace exterior. Add Laiki Geitonia, the Leventis Museum (Nicosia social history), Ledra Street, and the Cyprus Museum for a complete cultural Nicosia day.

Bring. Comfortable shoes, water, notebook for textile fans. When. Tuesday-Saturday during normal museum hours, closed Sunday and Monday. Cool months for combining with old-town walking. The Folk Art Museum is the unhurried, dignified preservation of pre-modern Cypriot life and an essential pairing with the more famous Byzantine collection next door.
