Entry Formalities for Poles to Cyprus — Passport, ID Card, EHIC, Insurance, and Driving License
Cyprus has been a full member of the European Union since 2004, but it is not part of the Schengen Area — and this is a difference that many tourists are unaware of, which has practical consequences when crossing the border. What does this mean? That at the border with Cyprus (at the airport or port) a passport check is formally possible, and documents must meet specific requirements.
Before you pack your suitcase, read this guide — so you don't stand at the airport with just your ID card and find out something is wrong.
Cyprus Outside Schengen — What Does This Mean in Practice?
The Schengen Area is an area of 27 European countries where systematic checks at internal borders have been abolished. Poland is in Schengen. France, Germany, Italy — are in Schengen. Cyprus — is not in Schengen, even though it is an EU country.
This means:
- At Larnaca or Paphos airport, you go through a border passport control
- Cypriot officials may check your documents and ask about the purpose of your trip
- A stamp in your passport (if you have a passport — NOTE: Cypriot officials do not stamp ID cards)
In practice, for EU citizens, the control is a formality — they rarely ask questions, scan the document, and proceed. But the document must be valid.
ID Card or Passport — What to Bring to Cyprus
Officially: citizens of the EU, including Poles, can enter Cyprus with a valid ID card (ID card). A passport is not required.
In practice: most travelers bring a passport or both an ID card and a passport. Why?
- An ID card has limited usability outside the EU — if you plan to fly from Cyprus to a country outside the EU (e.g., Israel, Jordan, Lebanon), you need a passport
- When renting cars, some agencies prefer a passport
- Hotels often require a passport for check-in (registration requirement — see below)
Recommendation: travel with a passport. If you only have an ID card and it is valid, entry will be possible, but a passport eliminates any complications.
Document Validity
The document must be valid for the entire duration of your stay. Cyprus formally does not require additional validity upon return (as some countries outside the EU require 6 months after departure), but check the expiry date of your document before you travel.
Note: Polish ID cards issued before 2019 have different expiry dates — check physically on the card.

EHIC — European Health Insurance Card in Cyprus
EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) — a white plastic card or an option in the mObywatel app — entitles you to necessary healthcare in public medical facilities in the EU/EEA countries.
Does EHIC work in Cyprus?
Yes — Cyprus is an EU country, EHIC works and covers necessary care in the public healthcare system (GESY since 2020). This means:
- Visiting a general practitioner in the public system
- Staying in a public hospital in emergencies
- Basic diagnostic tests
What does EHIC not cover?
- Private clinics and hospitals (which tourists often use due to quality and lack of queues)
- Costs of repatriation to Poland (EHIC will not pay for an ambulance flight to your country)
- Planned treatment that is not an emergency
- Accident and civil liability insurance
Recommendation: always bring your EHIC, but also take out private travel insurance — it's not a big cost, and it covers a much wider range.
Travel Insurance for Cyprus — What Should It Include
A good travel policy for Cyprus should include:
- Medical Costs (KL): minimum 30,000 EUR, preferably 100,000 EUR — costs of staying in a private hospital can be high
- Accidental Death and Injury (NNW): beach, sports accidents
- Repatriation: medical transport to Poland — can cost 10,000–30,000 EUR without insurance
- Baggage: theft or loss of luggage
- Civil Liability: if you accidentally cause damage to others
Polish insurance companies (PZU, Warta, Allianz, Generali, Ergo Hestia) offer travel policies for Cyprus from around 15–30 EUR per week for one person, depending on the scope and sport (diving, riding, trekking, skiing may require an extension).
When buying a policy, check: whether it covers activities you plan to do (skiing in Troodos, quad biking, jet skiing, diving). Standard policies often exclude "extreme sports."
Driving License in Cyprus — What You Need to Know
You can travel to Cyprus by ferry from Greece (Rhodes, Piraeus) or Israel (Haifa). The port in Limassol is the main maritime entry point. Upon entry through the port — the same document control as at the airport.
Ferry lines: Louis Cruise Lines, Salamis Lines and irregular seasonal connections. The journey from Piraeus to Limassol takes about 16–18 hours.
Telephony and Roaming — Communication Costs
Since 2017, the "roam like at home" regulation has been in force in the EU — you can use your Polish phone in Cyprus without additional charges for roaming within your Polish package. However, check the limits — some packages have restrictions on data transfer outside Poland.
Alternatively: a local Cypriot SIM card (e.g., CYTA, Epic, MTN) with a data package of 20–30 EUR per week available at airports and in city centers.
