The Healthcare System in Cyprus — An Overview

Cyprus introduced a universal health insurance system (GESY — General Health System) in 2019–2020. It covers all permanent residents of the island and is based on an insurance model funded by contributions.

For tourists from the EU, the situation is straightforward:

  • EU citizens with an EHIC card are entitled to treatment in public facilities on the same terms as Cypriots
  • Tourists from outside the EU must rely on private travel insurance
  • In emergencies, treatment is always provided, regardless of insurance

European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) — What Does It Cover?

What is the EHIC?

The European Health Insurance Card (issued by NFZ in Poland, free of charge) guarantees access to medical care in public facilities in all EU/EEA countries on the same terms as local insured individuals.

How to Obtain an EHIC Before Travelling to Cyprus?

  1. Submit an application online on the NFZ website or at a local NFZ branch
  2. The card is issued free of charge, usually within a few days
  3. Validity: from 1 to 5 years (depending on the NFZ branch)
  4. Carry it with you — not in your suitcase!

What Does the EHIC Cover in Cyprus?

  • Visits to a general practitioner within the GESY network
  • Hospital treatment in public hospitals
  • Diagnostic tests (X-rays, ultrasounds, blood tests) ordered by a public doctor
  • Prescription drugs prescribed by a public doctor (with co-payment)
  • Dental treatment — only emergency and pain relief

What the EHIC Does NOT Cover

  • Private clinics and private doctors
  • Repatriation to Poland
  • Interruption of holidays and consequential costs
  • Chronic diseases requiring specialist care outside of emergency scope

Important rule: The EHIC is not travel insurance — it is only access to public healthcare. Always purchase additional travel insurance that covers repatriation and private treatment.

Public Hospitals in Cyprus

Main Regional Hospitals

Limassol / Lemesos

  • Limassol General Hospital — the largest in the southern part of the island, emergency department 24/7

Paphos / Paphos

  • Paphos General Hospital — serves the western part of the island

Larnaca

  • Larnaca General Hospital — close to the airport, emergency room 24/7

Nicosia / Lefkosia

  • Nicosia General Hospital — the largest in Cyprus, transplant center, specialist departments

Ayia Napa / Famagusta

  • Paralimni Hospital (Famagusta General) — serves the Ayia Napa and Protaras area

How to Get to the Hospital Emergency Room?

In an emergency, call 112 — a dispatcher speaking English will guide you through the procedure. Ambulances are modern and well-equipped. Arrival time in urban areas: 8–15 minutes.

Private Medical Care — Fast and Convenient

The private system in Cyprus is of a high standard. Many Cypriot doctors have been trained in the UK and USA — communication in English is standard.

Private Clinics in Major Cities

  • Apollonion Hospital — Limassol, one of the largest private hospitals on the island
  • Ygia Polyclinic — Limassol, diagnostic center
  • Evangelismos Hospital — Nicosia
  • Iasis Hospital — Paphos

Private Price List (Approximate)

| Service | Approximate Price | |---|---| | Visit to a general practitioner | 40–80 EUR | | Visit to a specialist | 80–150 EUR | | Chest X-ray | 50–90 EUR | | Blood tests (basic package) | 30–70 EUR | | ECG | 30–50 EUR | | X-ray of a broken bone | 100–200 EUR | | Hospitalization (per night) | 300–800 EUR |

Private travel insurance covers these costs — hence its absolute necessity.

Pharmacies in Cyprus

Pharmacies (Farmakio / Φαρμακείο) are readily available. You will find at least one in every town. Most pharmacists speak English.

Night Duty: Rotational duty system — list available in the window of each pharmacy or by calling 1413 (pharmacy information line).

Medications: Cyprus is in the EU, so prescription drugs require a prescription. OTC medications are readily available. Drug prices are similar to Polish prices or slightly higher.

Travel Insurance — What Should It Cover?

When choosing travel insurance for Cyprus, check:

  1. Sum insured for medical costs: minimum 100,000 EUR — the higher, the better
  2. Medical repatriation: mandatory — flights to Poland can cost 15,000–50,000 EUR
  3. Accidental injury coverage: accidents on beaches, quads, water sports
  4. Water sports and diving: if you plan to dive — check the policy coverage!
  5. 24/7 Assistance: telephone line in Polish

Popular insurance for Poles in Cyprus: Allianz, AXA, PZU Travel, Generali, Signal Iduna. Cost of a 10-day policy for an adult: 30–80 PLN.

Most Common Health Problems for Tourists in Cyprus

  1. Sunburn — the most common reason for a doctor's visit. Protect your skin with SPF 50+, avoid the sun between 12–16.
  2. Dehydration and heatstroke — particularly dangerous for children. Drink 2–3 liters of water per day.
  3. Stomach ailments — less common than in Asia, but can occur when switching to a Mediterranean diet
  4. Sports injuries — water sports, bicycles, hiking
  5. Exacerbation of chronic diseases — heat can worsen heart disease, diabetes, asthma

Special Medical Needs — Planning Ahead

If you take regular medication:

  • Bring a supply for the entire trip + a few days extra
  • Have documentation with you (in English, if possible)
  • Check if your medication is available in Cyprus (useful in case of lost luggage)

Summary

Cyprus offers solid medical care for tourists. Obtaining an EHIC before travelling is the minimum — supplemented by private travel insurance with a high guarantee amount. In emergencies, call 112 and use emergency rooms in Limassol, Paphos, Larnaca or Nicosia.
