O atrakcji

The Bell Tower and Ecclesiastical Museum of Saint Lazarus Church sit alongside the main church in central Larnaca, completing the religious complex around the venerated tomb of Saint Lazarus. The bell tower itself was rebuilt in 1857 after the Ottoman authorities had earlier removed the original — Christian church belfries were restricted under Ottoman rule, and many Cypriot churches lost their original bell towers between the 16th and 19th centuries. The 1857 reconstruction is in the local stone with a simple but elegant three-stage belfry.

The Ecclesiastical Museum occupies the south wing of the church complex and presents the church's collection of vestments, altar plate, votive offerings, ancient liturgical books, and ecclesiastical silver. The collection is small but well curated, with several pieces of genuine importance: a 17th-century gospel-cover in chased silver; embroidered episcopal vestments of various periods; a series of 19th-century silver votive offerings (icons, candle-stands, lamps) gifted by Cypriot diaspora families; and the original bell-tower top knocked down in the Ottoman period, preserved as a historical artefact.

The museum also includes the principal relic-case associated with Saint Lazarus — fragments of the saint's relics returned from Constantinople in 1972 after a 9th-century translation to Byzantium, now displayed in a marble sarcophagus in the church crypt below (separate access). The museum context explains the relic's history and the broader devotion to Saint Lazarus across the Greek-Orthodox world.

Insider tips. Open during normal church hours (roughly 08:00-12:30 and 15:30-17:30). A small admission fee for the museum (around 1-2 EUR). Photography is generally not permitted inside the museum or crypt. Allow 30-45 minutes for the museum after the main church visit. Modest dress essential.

Combinations. The Saint Lazarus complex itself is a complete cultural-religious half-day: church (with crypt and tomb), bell tower, ecclesiastical museum. Add the Foinikoudes promenade (3 minutes' walk), Larnaca Castle (5 minutes), the Pierides Museum (3 minutes), and a fish lunch at one of the harbour or Mackenzie tavernas. A complete Larnaca cultural day.

Bring. Modest dress (or wrap from the church entrance), small change for candle and museum, comfortable shoes. When. Year-round; cool months are best for combining with old-town walking. Early morning weekdays are quietest. The Saint Lazarus museum is the small but important supplement to the main church and worth the modest extra entry for visitors with an interest in Cypriot ecclesiastical history.
