Angeloktisti Church

Angeloktisti Church — literally 'built by angels' — sits in the centre of Kiti village 11 km south-west of Larnaca, a small stone church with a steeply-pitched timber-and-tile roof that looks unassuming from outside. The exterior gives no clue to what is inside: a 6th-century apse mosaic of the Virgin and Child flanked by the archangels Michael and Gabriel, one of the very few surviving examples of monumental early-Byzantine mosaic on Cyprus and one of the most important early-Christian images in the Mediterranean.

The mosaic occupies the conch of the original 6th-century apse — the only surviving fragment of the early-Christian basilica that originally stood here. The church around it was rebuilt several times: an 11th-century cross-in-square Byzantine church, a 14th-century Frankish-Lusignan extension with a Latin chapel (the Latin chapel survives, now dedicated to the saints Cosmas and Damian), and various subsequent modifications. The composite building is itself architecturally instructive — three building periods visible side by side.

The mosaic itself: the Virgin Mary stands holding the Christ Child on her left arm, flanked symmetrically by the archangels in court costume holding orbs and sceptres, against a gold-tessera background. The face of the Virgin survives almost intact — serene, slightly elongated, with the linear eyebrows and pursed mouth of late-antique court portraiture. The icon is signed in Greek along the lower border: the Latin equivalent would translate as 'Holy Mary, Mother of God'. It pre-dates the Justinianic mosaics of Ravenna by perhaps two decades.

Insider tips. Open daily 09:00-12:00 and 14:00-16:00 (closed during liturgy). Modest dress essential. Photography is generally not permitted. Allow 30 minutes for a careful look — bring eyes adjusted from outside light. The keyholder is from the village and may need to be summoned (phone number on the gate).

Combinations. Pair with Faros Beach (3 minutes south — for a beach swim and lunch at one of the fish tavernas), with the Cape Kiti lighthouse, with Hala Sultan Tekke (15 minutes east), or with Larnaca old town. A complete Larnaca-region cultural day.
