The Bath of Aphrodite (Loutra tis Aphrodites) is a small spring-fed natural grotto in a fig-and-laurel-shaded hollow above Latchi marina, on the eastern edge of the Akamas peninsula. Greek mythology — preserved in local Cypriot folklore long before the modern tourism — identifies the spot as where Aphrodite bathed and where she first met the youth Adonis. The grotto is small, intimate, and unspectacular by modern attraction standards: a stone pool fed by a constant trickle of mountain water, a fig tree casting shade, the smell of damp moss and fern.
The site cannot be entered — bathing is forbidden to protect the spring — but you can walk a short loop around the grotto and a small interpretive panel explains the mythology. The wider importance of the spot is as the trailhead for the two great Akamas nature walks: the Aphrodite Trail (7.5 km loop, 3-4 hours, the classic) and the Adonis Trail (slightly longer parallel route). Both are well marked, well graded, and one of the better waymarked walks in the eastern Mediterranean.
Adjacent to the grotto, the small CTO Aphrodite Botanical Park has Mediterranean garden plants labelled and explained — fig, carob, terebinth, mastic, oregano, sage — a useful primer for visitors who want to identify what they will smell on the trails. There is a café and a small souvenir shop at the trailhead car park.
Insider tips. The grotto itself is a five-minute stop — it is the trail that justifies the visit. Allow 3-4 hours minimum if you mean to walk. The trail is exposed in long sections; sun protection essential. Bring water (1.5L+). Spring is the best season for wildflowers; autumn for clear cool walking. Parking at the trailhead is free.
Combinations. Pair the Bath of Aphrodite and a portion of the trail with Latchi village (5 minutes, fish tavernas at the harbour), with a Blue Lagoon boat tour from Latchi (afternoon contrast), with Polis Chrysochous, or with Avakas Gorge (longer drive, 4x4 ideal).
Bring. Sturdy walking shoes, 1.5L water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, swimsuit if continuing to a Akamas swim, paper map, camera. When. April-June and September-November are perfect; July-August midday is brutal on the trails. The Bath of Aphrodite is a small, sincere mythological note and the natural starting point for serious Akamas walking.
