Polis Municipal Beach

Polis Municipal Beach runs east of Polis Chrysochous town, a long Blue Flag stretch of fine pale sand backed by the long-established municipal camping area shaded by mature eucalyptus trees. The beach faces north into the long Chrysochous Bay — sheltered, calm, with shallow water that warms up earlier in the year than the south-coast beaches and stays clear through the summer.

The setting is what makes Polis distinctive. Polis Chrysochous (often shortened to just Polis) is a small slow-paced town on the western edge of Cyprus, the gateway to the Akamas peninsula, and a deliberate alternative to the resort coasts of the south and east. The municipal beach is its summer focal point — used by Cypriot families on weekends and by visitors staying in the village's small guesthouses and the camping area. The eucalyptus trees behind the beach give a partial shade strip rare elsewhere on Cyprus.

Sunbed concessions, a beach restaurant, watersports kiosks (banana boat, pedalo, kayak hire), and lifeguards in season give the beach its standard tourist infrastructure. The water is consistently clean and Blue Flag certified. The camping area behind (Polis Camping) is one of the few municipal camping operations still working on Cyprus and a popular budget base for Akamas exploration.

What to do. Swim, sunbathe, eat fish at the beach restaurant or one of the Polis old-town tavernas (5 minutes inland), walk along the eucalyptus-shaded back-beach. Combine with a half-day at Latchi (10 minutes west) for the harbour and fish tavernas, or with a Blue Lagoon boat trip from Latchi marina.

Insider tips. The eucalyptus shade is the back-beach's distinctive feature — pitch your towel at the back if you want it. Polis old town has a charming village square (5 minutes' walk inland) with several small tavernas — the Old Town Tavern is a long-running favourite. Mid-week mornings are quietest. Polis is the natural overnight base for 1-2 days of Akamas exploration.

Combinations. Pair with Latchi marina and harbour (10 minutes — fish tavernas), with the Baths of Aphrodite trailhead (15 minutes — Akamas walking trails), with the Blue Lagoon by boat from Latchi, or with Avakas Gorge (20 minutes by road, 4x4 ideal). The natural Akamas-from-Polis itinerary.

Bring. Sunscreen, hat, swimsuit, water, comfortable shoes if combining with Akamas walking, camping gear if staying. When. May-October. May and June give the warmest sea early in the season; September is similarly fine. July-August is busier but the long beach absorbs visitors. Polis Municipal Beach is the slow western alternative and, for many returning visitors, the better Cyprus.
