O atrakcji

The Venetian Walls of Nicosia are one of the most complete and dramatic Renaissance-period city fortifications surviving anywhere in the eastern Mediterranean. Built between 1567 and 1570 to a design by the Venetian engineer Giulio Savorgnano, the walls form a perfect star-shaped enclosure roughly 5 km in circumference around the historic core of Nicosia, with eleven angled bastions and three monumental gates. They were completed barely months before the Ottomans took the city in September 1570 — a 49-day siege ended a fortification programme that still defines the shape of the modern capital.

The military design is the textbook example of late-Renaissance star-fort theory: angled bastions allow flanking fire along the curtain walls between them, eliminating dead ground, and the geometric perfection of the layout is best appreciated from the air or from any decent map. Each of the eleven bastions was named after a noble Venetian family who funded its construction (Caraffa, Tripoli, Rocas, etc.).

Three of the original gates survive in good condition. The Famagusta Gate (Porta Giuliana) on the eastern side is the most photogenic — a long vaulted passage cut through the rampart, now restored as a cultural centre. The Paphos Gate on the west side is now a busy traffic intersection but the gate-house survives. The Kyrenia Gate is on the north side in the Turkish-administered half of Nicosia. The walls themselves can be walked on top of in several sections — the Costanza Bastion in particular is open as a public park.

Insider tips. Walking the entire 5 km circuit takes about 90 minutes — most visitors do shorter sections. The Famagusta Gate is the must-see — combine with the Costanza Bastion park immediately south for the best wall walk. The Paphos Gate area also includes the Greek-Cypriot side of the Green Line crossing. The walls are floodlit at night in many sections; an evening walk is dramatic.

Combinations. Pair the walls with Laiki Geitonia (inside the walls), the Cyprus Museum (just outside the Paphos Gate), the Ledra Street crossing to Turkish Nicosia (which itself bisects the walled city), and the Archbishop's Palace complex. A complete cultural Nicosia day uses the walls as the structural framework.

Bring. Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, hat, water, camera, paper map. When. Year-round. Cool months (October-April) for unhurried walking. Late afternoon and evening light is the best for photography of the bastion stonework. The Venetian Walls are the structural masterpiece of historic Nicosia and the framework around which everything else in the old city sits.
