The Cathedral of Saint John the Theologian (Agios Ioannis) sits beside the Archbishop's Palace in central Nicosia, a small single-aisled stone church built in 1665 on the foundations of a Lusignan-period Benedictine abbey. The exterior is unassumingly plain — local sandstone, simple gabled roof, modest belfry — and reads more as parish church than cathedral. The interior, by contrast, is one of the more richly decorated post-Byzantine spaces in Cyprus.
The cathedral functions as the seat of the Archbishop of Cyprus and the principal liturgical centre of the Greek-Orthodox Church of Cyprus. The interior decoration is mainly 18th-century: a magnificent carved walnut iconostasis covered in gold leaf, with figurative panels and elaborate baroque-influenced ornament; a cycle of wall paintings covering the entire interior, including scenes from the life of Saint John the Theologian; and the Archbishop's throne, an elaborate carved-and-gilded chair from the late 18th century. The wall paintings are by 18th-century Cypriot painters working in a continuation of post-Byzantine tradition.
The cathedral is part of the Archbishop's Palace complex, which also includes the Cyprus Folk Art Museum, the Byzantine Museum (with its important icon collection), and the Pancyprian Gymnasium. Together this complex is the cultural and religious heart of Greek-Orthodox Nicosia.
Insider tips. Open mornings and late afternoons (closed at midday); modest dress essential — covered shoulders and knees, no shorts, women may borrow a wrap at the entrance. Photography is generally not permitted inside. The cathedral is small — allow 30-45 minutes. Visit the Byzantine Museum next door for context.
Combinations. The Archbishop's Palace complex is itself a half-day: cathedral, Byzantine Museum, Folk Art Museum, palace exterior. Add a walk to Faneromeni Square, Laiki Geitonia, Ledra Street, and the Green Line crossing for the complete cultural Nicosia day.
Bring. Modest dress (or wrap), small change for a candle, water, comfortable shoes. When. Year-round; avoid Sunday morning liturgy unless you are attending. Open hours roughly 08:00-12:00 and 15:30-17:30. Saint John's Cathedral is the small, jewel-box centre of Greek-Orthodox Nicosia and the historical heart of the Cypriot Church.
