Christian Cyprus 2026 — One of the Oldest Christian Lands on Earth

TL;DR

Cyprus was one of the very first places on earth to receive the Christian faith, evangelised by the Apostles Paul and Barnabas around 45 AD. Today it remains a deeply Orthodox island of churches, chapels and living tradition.

Christian Cyprus 2026 — One of the Oldest Christian Lands on Earth

Few places wear their faith as gently and as visibly as Cyprus. This is one of the oldest Christian lands on earth — and everywhere you travel, from the coast to the mountains, you will find churches, monasteries and tiny whitewashed chapels watching over the land.

Where the faith began

According to the Acts of the Apostles, Cyprus was among the very first places to receive the Gospel. Around 45 AD, the Apostles Paul and Barnabas travelled across the island from Salamis to Paphos, preaching and, tradition says, converting the Roman governor — one of the earliest recorded conversions of a Roman official. Barnabas himself was a Cypriot, born in Salamis, and is honoured as the founder and patron of the island's Church.

One of the oldest Orthodox churches in the world

The Church of Cyprus is one of the oldest autocephalous (self-governing) Orthodox churches, its independence recognised at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. For nearly sixteen centuries it has shaped the island's calendar, art, villages and daily life.

Faith you can see everywhere

  • Whitewashed chapels perched on sea cliffs and mountain ridges.
  • Great monasteries hidden in cool pine forests.
  • Byzantine painted churches whose frescoes are treasured worldwide.
  • Village churches at the centre of every community, their bells marking the day.

A warm welcome

You do not need to be religious to feel moved here. Visitors are welcomed into churches and monasteries with genuine warmth — simply dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and enter quietly. Light a candle, sit in the cool stillness, and you will understand why Cyprus has kept its faith so close for two thousand years.

In 2026, the Christian heritage of Cyprus is not a museum piece — it is alive, gentle and everywhere.
