Cyprus Wine Routes — 7 Official Enotourism Trails with a Map Outlined by CTO

Cyprus is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world. Ceramic vessels dated to around 3500 BC with remnants of fermented grapes found in Neolithic Choirokoitia are among the earliest traces of wine in history. Commandaria — a sweet wine made from dried grapes — has been a documented brand since the 13th century and is considered the oldest wine in the world with a continuous, unbroken production.

Today, CTO (Cyprus Tourism Organisation) has mapped out 7 official "Wine Routes" — scenic driving routes leading through vineyards, wine villages, and tasting locations. This is a well-organized form of enotourism, used by both wine connoisseurs and ordinary families looking for a different way to explore the island.

What are Cyprus Wine Routes?

Cyprus Wine Routes are 7 defined driving routes, each leading through a specific geographic region with a characteristic wine profile. The routes have names and their own maps, available on the CTO website (visitcyprus.com) and at tourist information centers.

Each route leads through:

  • Designated vineyards open to visitors (tastings)
  • Wine villages with taverns serving local wine
  • Viewpoints and local cultural attractions
  • Accommodation in agrotourism farms

Route 1: Commandaria Region (Limassol District — mountains)

The most important enotourism route, leading through 14 wine-producing villages of Commandaria: Agios Konstantinos, Agios Mamas, Alassa, Apsiou, Dierona, Gerasa, Kalo Chorio, Lania, Louvaras, Monagri, Pampela, Potamiou, Silikou, Sykopetra.

Wine Profile: Commandaria — sweet, fortified, made from dried Mavro and Xynisteri grapes. DOC (Protected Designation of Origin) classification. Alcohol 15–20%. Taste: raisins, dates, figs, honey, caramel.

Route Length: Approx. 80 km loop from Limassol Time: Full day (7–8 hours with visits)

Recommended vineyards along the route:

  • Kyperounda Winery (Kyperounda village, 1100 m above sea level): Tasting 5–8 EUR/person, specialty Petritis and Commandaria. Terrace with views of the Troodos vineyards.
  • Zambartas Winery (Agios Amvrosios): Tastings for groups with advance booking.
  • Linos Wine Museum (Gerasa): Museum of the traditional wine-making process, historical presses, clay pots.

Route 2: Krasochoria Region (Around Platres and Pitsylia)

"Wine villages" (krasochoria = grape villages) on the slopes of Troodos. A region known for its rich rural culture preserved in almost pristine condition.

Wine Profile: Dry white Xynisteri, dry red Maratheftiko, herbal herbal vino santo.

The village of Omodos (described in detail in a separate article) is the heart of this route. Other key points:

  • Arsos: Terraced vineyards, Kiprovin winery. Guided tour of the vineyard terraces: 10–15 EUR.
  • Vouni: Vouni Panayia winery, European awards for Maratheftiko. Tasting 6 EUR.

Route 3: Larnaka District Wine Route

The south of the island, a milder climate than the mountains, different wine profiles. Villages Lefkara and Kato Drys.

Kato Drys: Birthplace of Nobel laureate Christodoulous from 2004. Small vineyards producing local zivania (traditional grape pomace spirit, approx. 45–60%).

Zivania: Note — Cypriot equivalent of Greek raki or Italian grappa. Strong, local, sold in small bottles in taverns. Legal, but not necessarily certified when purchased from farmers (ask for an invoice).

Route 4: Paphos District Wine Route

Western Cyprus, around Stroumpi and Agios Amvrosios. Kolios Winery — one of the larger producers — has warehouses here. Plantations of Mavro and Lefkada.

Local Attraction: Kouklia Castle (Paphos, on Route 4) — the ancient city of Palaepafos with the ruins of the temple of Aphrodite. Ticket 2.50 EUR.

Route 5: Pitsyllia Wine Trail

The mountainous region of Pitsylia on the eastern slopes of Troodos. Vineyards at 700–1000 m above sea level — the coolest microclimate for Cypriot grapes.

Wine Profile: White Xynisteri with a distinct acidity and minerality. Red Maratheftiko with a plum background.

Tsiakkas Winery (Pelendri village): Family-run, small, authentic. Tasting 5 EUR with a terrace overlooking the vineyards. White Tsiakkas Xynisteri awarded at competitions.

Route 6: Nicosia District Wine Route

Around Omodhos and Pelendri from the Nicosia side. Geographically connects with Pitsylia.

Route 7: North Limassol Wine Route (Troodos Foothills)

The foothills of Troodos on the Limassol side. Keo winery (one of the largest mass producers) and several small artisan producers. Keo offers tours of the facility and group tastings (booking: keo.com.cy).

Practical Tips for Enoturists

Best Time: September–October — grape harvest, festivals in villages, temperature 22–28°C. Getting There: Own car essential for most routes (no public transport to small wine villages). Driver: Be sure to designate a non-drinking driver — tastings typically involve 4–8 wines, each 50–100 ml. Alternative: organized tours with a driver from Limassol (group of 4 people cost: 80–120 EUR for a full day). Cash: Many small vineyards do not accept cards — bring 50–100 EUR in cash.

Tasting Prices

| Type of Tasting | Price | |----------------|------| | Basic (3–4 wines) | 5–8 EUR/person | | Extended (6–8 wines with cheese and bread) | 10–15 EUR/person | | Commandaria tasting menu | 15–25 EUR/person | | Vineyard guided tours | +5–10 EUR |

Wine Purchase: Most vineyards sell bottles at prices lower than in city shops. Average good local bottle: 8–15 EUR. Premium Commandaria (vintage): 15–30 EUR.

Awards and Certificates

Cypriot wines are winning more and more awards at European competitions. Decanter Wine Awards 2023: several gold medals for Maratheftiko from Vouni Panayia and Xynisteri from Tsiakkas. Wines of Cyprus promotes them under the slogan "Born from the Sun".

Accommodation along the Wine Routes

Agrotourism guesthouses and cottages on vineyards available through the Cyprus Department of Agrotourism (agrotourism.com.cy) or on CyprusBooker with the "Troodos mountains" and "agrotourism" filter. Prices: 50–100 EUR/night for a room, 80–150 EUR for a house for 4 people.
