Skiing in Cyprus — Mount Olympus in Winter. Lifts, Prices, Equipment, Season
Skiing in Cyprus — this statement usually evokes one of two reactions: surprise or disbelief. A Mediterranean island known for 340 days of sunshine a year has a ski resort? It does. At the summit of Olympus, 1952 m above sea level, the country's only ski facility has been operating for decades. The season is short and uncertain, and the slopes are not comparable to Austrian ones — but skiing against a Mediterranean backdrop, with views of the sea, is an experience you won't find anywhere else in Europe at this price.

Ski Season — When is There Snow
This is the biggest uncertainty: Cyprus does not guarantee snow. The season begins around mid-December, when temperatures on Olympus regularly drop below freezing. But:
- Good year (e.g., 2021/22): snow from mid-December to the end of March, 80–100 days open
- Poor year: a few weeks of loose snow, T-bar lifts sometimes closed
- No snow: it happens — the resort is closed
The most reliable months: January and February. March: it gets warmer, the snow melts. For "guaranteed" skiing, come in January.
How to check the current snow conditions:
- CSK website: csk.org.cy (snow report)
- Facebook: "Cyprus Ski Club" — daily updates during the season
- Live camera: available on the CSK website
Ski Slopes
The Olimpus resort has several slopes divided roughly into:
- Easy slopes (green/blue): At the lower station, ideal for beginners. Gentle slopes, small lift.
- Intermediate slopes (red): Length up to 1.5 km, elevation difference approx. 200 m
- Most difficult slope: One steeper slope, but not comparable to Alpine "black" runs
Besides the slopes: no snowboard park. Snowboarding is allowed on the slopes.
Getting There in Winter
From Nicosia (approx. 70 km): B9 towards Kakopetria → Prodromos → Troodos → Olympus. Roads are cleared regularly during the season by the Cypriot Road Department.
From Limassol (approx. 50 km): B8 → Platres → Troodos Square → Olympus. The road through Platres is narrow and winding.
Snow chains: Mandatory or strongly recommended when entering from approx. 1200 m above sea level during the full season. Snow chain fitting points are along the road — locals will help. Snow chain rental is available in Limassol or Nicosia, car rental companies usually do not provide chains.
Parking at the resort: Large, free. On busy weekends in January-February, it may be full — arrive before 9:00.
Combined Tourism: Mountains + Sea in One Day
Mount Olympus has this unique property: in the morning you ski at -5°C, at 2:00 PM you descend to Limassol (40 km, 40 min), at 4:00 PM you sit on the promenade at 14°C with a coffee. This is possible in Europe only in Sicily near Etna, in Lebanon and in Cyprus.
Popular weekend combination for Cypriots from Limassol: Friday evening in the mountains (overnight stay in Troodos), Saturday skiing, Saturday evening dinner on the coast.
For Children: Safety and Learning
Mount Olympus is a great place for children to have their first ski lessons. Reasons:
- Light traffic on the slopes compared to European resorts
- The beginner slope is quiet
- CSK instructors with experience
- The rental shop has equipment for children from XS sizes
Children under 12 are required to wear a helmet (resort regulations).
Hotels near Troodos accepting ski guests (with equipment drying room, breakfast, garage) can be found on CyprusBooker — filter "Troodos" with the "winter" option, period: December-March.
