Cyprus in May — is it the ideal month to visit Cyprus? Temperatures, water, crowds, accommodation prices

TL;DR

May in Cyprus: 26-28°C, sea 21-23°C, crowds 50% smaller than August, accommodation prices 40% lower. Check if it's worth it.

Cyprus in May — Is It the Ideal Month to Visit? Temperatures, Water, Crowds, Accommodation Prices

May is a month that consistently ranks at the top of "when to visit Cyprus" lists — and for good reason. The sun shines strongly, but without the intensity of August. The sea is already warm enough for swimming. There are no crowds like those of July and August. Ticket and accommodation prices are lower than in peak season. Sounds ideal? Let's check the numbers.

Weather in May — Specific Data

Average air temperature in May: 26–28°C during the day, 16–18°C at night. The southern coast (Limassol, Larnaca) is warmer than the western coast (Pafos). Mountainous regions of Troodos are 8–10°C cooler — ideal for excursions.

Sunny days: 28–29 per month. Rainfall is practically non-existent — May is already a dry month. Any occasional showers are rare and last about an hour.

Sea water temperature in May: 21–23°C. This is already a comfortable temperature for most people to swim. For comparison: the Baltic summer rarely exceeds 18°C. Swimming for a whole hour is pleasant and not chilling.

UV index in May: 6–7, which is high. From this point on, sun protection is mandatory — SPF 30+ minimum, SPF 50 for people with fair skin. Without cream, 30 minutes on the beach is enough to get sunburned.

What's Open, What's Not Yet

What's Open and Lively in May:

  • All restaurants, cafes, taverns — fully open
  • Water parks (Fasouri Watermania in Limassol, WaterWorld in Ayia Napa) — open from the beginning of May
  • Water sports: jet ski, parasailing, diving — fully available
  • Village markets (panigiri) — the season of village fairs starts in May
  • Festival of Kataklysmos (Pentecost) — falls in May or June; the biggest seaside celebration in Cyprus

What's Still Missing or Less Abundant:

  • Nightlife in Ayia Napa and Protaras — slowly getting started, full swing from June
  • Large hotel all-inclusive entertainment — some hotels start only from May 15th
  • Catamarans and boat trips — some operators start only after May 10th

Crowds — Where and How Many?

May is a low-medium season. Beaches are 30–50% full, far from the full occupancy of August. UNESCO sites (Pafos mosaics, Kourion) have queues on weekends, but nothing comparable to summer.

Most crowded in May:

  • Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa — popular among Scandinavians and Britons for May Day
  • Coral Bay near Pafos — popular beach accessible by car
  • The center of Larnaca around Finikoudes promenade

Quieter alternatives:

  • Konnos Bay (east of the island, Protaras region) — smaller cove, rocky entrance
  • Lara Beach (Pafos, turtle reserve) — access only by 4x4, almost empty
  • Beaches of the Akamas Peninsula — accessible by boat or hiking trail

Vegetation in May

May is the last month before the summer drought. The country is still green:

  • Meadows covered with wildflowers — cornflower, poppy, cornflower
  • Carob trees bloom — intense pollen scent (warning for allergy sufferers!)
  • Grapevines put out leaves
  • Grass on the Troodos mountain meadows is still green

After June 20th, the island will start to turn yellow from the heat and lack of rain. May is the last "green" month of the season.

Skin Tone and May Sunshine

Poles have the lowest level of melanin after 6 months of winter. The UV Index of 6–7 in May is a real risk:

  • 1st degree sunburn: 20–30 minutes without cream for a person with fair skin
  • 2nd degree sunburn (blisters): with 1–2 hours of exposure at noon

Plan for fair skin: SPF 50 cream applied 30 minutes before exposure, reapplied every 2 hours. Shade between 11 am and 3 pm. Cream available for purchase in Cyprus (pharmacies): 6–12 EUR per bottle, but Polish brands (e.g. Alterra, Avene, Eucerin) may not be available.
