Cyprus in March – weather, prices, blooming almonds. Is it worth visiting before the season?

TL;DR

March in Cyprus is blooming almonds, empty Troodos trails and accommodation prices half lower than in summer. Check if this month is right for you.

Cyprus in March — Weather, Prices, Flowering Almonds. Is it Worth Visiting Before the Season

March in Cyprus can surprise even experienced travelers. The island isn't yet fully asleep in its summer slumber, but it has definitely shaken off its winter torpor. Temperatures are rising, almond trees are finishing their bloom, and in the Troodos Mountains you can still find the last snow. If you're looking for sunshine without crowds and without summer prices — March might just be the moment.

Weather in March — Numbers, Not Myths

The average air temperature in March is 17–19°C on the coast. Sunny days prevail — statistically around 20 days without rain during the month. Nights are cooler: 9–12°C, so an evening sweater or light jacket is essential.

The sea water temperature in March is 17–18°C — cold for most Polish tourists. Cold water swimming is possible, recreational swimming for the determined, but beaching in a vacation style is rather out of the question. That's not what you go for in March.

UV Index: 3–4, which is moderate. You can sit in the sun longer without risking sunburn, but SPF 30 cream is still recommended for longer excursions.

Rainfall: March can be rainy. On average 30–40 mm of rain spread over 8–10 days. The rains are short and intense — not week-long downpours like in Poland. It rains in the morning, the sun shines in the afternoon — that's a typical scenario.

Wind: From the west and southwest, moderate. There are no summer Meltemi winds — this is a calmer period for sailors.

Flowering Almonds — March's Icon

The most characteristic sight of March in Cyprus is the flowering almond trees (amygdalies). The flowering begins as early as late January in the warmest regions, and in March it continues in the higher-altitude villages. Regions where the phenomenon is most impressive:

  • Marathasa Valley (Troodos region) — hills covered in white and pink flowers
  • Around Polis on the northwest coast
  • Pitsillia — a rural area between Troodos and the eastern part of the island
  • Fyti and Kilani villages in the Paphos district

The flowering depends on the weather of the year — in a warm year it may end by mid-March, in a cold year it lasts until the end of the month. It's worth checking local forums or asking the apartment owner.

After the almonds, the first anemones, wild Cypriot orchids (Orchis italica and other endemic species) and lilacs also bloom. March is one of the most beautiful months for botany enthusiasts.

What to Do in Cyprus in March?

Hiking in the Troodos Mountains

March is the best month for trekking in Cyprus. Temperatures in the mountains (800–1900 m above sea level) are comfortable — 10–14°C during the day — the greenery is intense, and the trails are not yet dusty. Recommended routes:

  • Atalante Trail (12 km, around the summit of Chionistra) — views of the entire island on a good day
  • Caledonia Falls near Platres — a waterfall beside a 3 km trail, in March the water flows in a full stream
  • Artemis Trail (7.5 km, loop around the summit) — relatively flat, ideal for families

Important: in March, there may still be snow in the Troodos at altitudes above 1600 m. The Troodos Ski Resort operates irregularly depending on snowfall — it's worth checking the current status before you go.

Cultural Tourism Without Queues

March is a golden time to visit places that are overcrowded in summer:

  • Ruins of Kourion (Kourion) — an ancient city-kingdom with an amphitheater and mosaics. In March: no coaches, free entry to the amphitheater
  • Limassol Castle — a Medieval museum
  • Mosaics in Paphos (Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, UNESCO) — mosaics from the 2nd–4th centuries AD in all their glory without crowds
  • Kykkos Monastery in the Troodos Mountains — one of the richest and most important Orthodox monasteries in Cyprus

Great Lent and Clean Monday

March often brings Kathari Deftera (Clean Monday) — the first day of Great Lent in the Orthodox calendar. In Cyprus, it is an official public holiday. Shops and banks are closed, but restaurants are open. The tradition: kite flying on the hills, picnics with Lenten dishes.

March and Great Britain — Tourist Traffic

There is a large British diaspora in Cyprus (around 60,000 permanent residents) and Cyprus is traditionally popular with Britons. After Brexit (2020) British citizens lose their EU EHIC — Poles still have it and that is a real benefit.

In March, Britons often come for a "lemon break" — an escape from the English winter. Hotels in Paphos and Limassol have a noticeable proportion of guests from the UK.

Price Guide for Market Prices in March

March is a good time to shop at the market (agora) in every town:

  • Strawberries: 1.50–2.50 EUR/kg (first season strawberry from the Paphos area)
  • Oranges: 0.60–0.90 EUR/kg
  • Lemons: 0.70–1.00 EUR/kg
  • Olive oil DOP: 15–20 EUR/l (at the winery or from the producer)
  • Halloumi fresh: 8–12 EUR/kg
  • Table wine: 3–6 EUR/bottle in a shop, 1.50–2.50 EUR/l in a barrel from the producer

Summary

March in Cyprus is a month for people who know what they're going for. Not for a hot sea or parties — but for flowering orchards, empty mountain trails, and monuments without crowds. Ticket and accommodation prices are at their lowest level of the year. The weather is changeable, but mostly sunny and pleasant.

This is not a vacation March from a travel agency brochure. This is Cyprus in its true form — requiring some planning, rewarding with an authentic experience.

Great Lent and Apokries in Cyprus — March 2026

Depending on the year, Orthodox Easter falls on different dates (2026: April 12). Great Lent begins 7 weeks earlier, and Carnival (Apokries) precedes it by 3 weeks.

In March 2026, Carnival may overlap with the start of your stay. Limassol is the main stage of the Cypriot carnival — the parade in the city center lasts for several hours, music, costumes, traditional carnival dishes. Hotels in Limassol are more expensive and fully booked during this time — plan in advance or choose another base.

Accommodation with mountain views in Troodos or near trails can be found on CyprusBooker with the "hiking trips" filter in the range of 50–120 EUR/night — especially in the areas of Platres, Kakopetria and Omodos.
