Caledonia Falls — 13-meter waterfall in Troodos. Route suitable for children
13-meter Caledonia Falls is the highest waterfall in Cyprus. It may seem modest compared to 200-meter Alpine cascades — but on an island where water is precious, the sight of a frothy stream cascading through a dense cedar forest is a true discovery. The trail leading here is one of the official Troodos Forest trails, marked and maintained by the Cypriot Forestry Department — signposted, safe, and suitable for families with children.
Location and how to get there
The waterfall is located in the valley of the Kryos Potamos river, 3 km south of the center of the mountain village of Platres (distance along the trail). From Limassol to Platres: approx. 35 km along the mountain road B8, time approx. 40–50 minutes.
Two starting points for the trail:
Upper start (near the trout farm / Psilo Dendro):
- GPS: 34.8908° N, 32.8520° E
- Parking: Large, free parking near the Psilo Dendro restaurant (a famous trout restaurant)
- From here, the trail descends 3 km to the waterfall and returns uphill — a total of 6 km
Lower start (Platres center):
- From the center of Platres, an asphalt road leads to the starting point near the bridge (GPS: 34.8793° N, 32.8476° E)
- Parking near the bridge: approx. 15 cars, free
- From here, the trail ascends 1.5 km to the waterfall
Recommendation: For families with children — start from the lower point, 1.5 km to the waterfall (40–50 min), return along the same route. Simpler, shorter, less effort.
Trail details (full route, upper to lower)
- Length: 3 km one way
- Elevation: -150 m (descent)
- Time: 60–80 minutes downhill, 90–110 minutes uphill
- Surface: Forest path, places rocky, slippery near the stream due to algae — be careful in wet conditions
- Signage: Yellow signs on trees and boards, every 200–300 m
Profile of the upper trail:
- Start at Psilo Dendro: dense cedar and pine forest, narrow path
- After 800 m: First bridge over the stream — often you can see trout here
- After 1.5 km: Miniature cascade (approx. 3 m) as a preview
- After 2.2 km: Viewpoint of Caledonia Falls from the side
- 2.5 km: Descent to the waterfall — viewing platform and concrete steps
Caledonia Falls — description
The waterfall is approximately 13 meters high, falling in three tiers into a pool below. The pool is shallow (approx. 40 cm) and clear — you can see the bottom. Cold water (12–15°C even in summer), refreshing to the touch.
In the winter-spring season (February–April) the waterfall is full — the roar is audible from 200 meters. In July–August the stream is noticeably weaker (a dry island), but still spectacular.
Swimming in the pool: Officially not recommended (forest area, water reserve). In practice, some tourists dip their feet — but entering the pool is prohibited due to the fragility of the ecosystem.
Children on the trail
Caledonia is one of the best trails for taking children in Cyprus:
- From what age: 3 years (shorter route from below, 1.5 km)
- Difficulty for children: Easy — few stones, no steep slopes on the shorter route
- Attractions along the way: Trout visible in the stream (children love it), butterflies, pine cones underfoot
- Stroller: Possible only for the first 200 m from the lower starting point — unsuitable further
Recommended kit for children: sports shoes with a rubber sole (not flip-flops), water, snacks.
Water and shade
The cedar-pine forest provides excellent shade throughout the trail — it's one of the few trails in Cyprus where you can comfortably walk even at noon in July. The temperature in the forest in summer is approx. 5–8°C lower than in direct sunlight.
Water from the stream is not potable without filtration (biological risk from trout farms upstream).
Option: Psilo Dendro Restaurant
There is a Psilo Dendro restaurant at the upper starting point — famous throughout Cyprus for its specialities in trout from its own farm. Price: 12–18 EUR per portion of grilled trout with fries. Terrace overlooking the stream, shade. Ideal for lunch before or after the trail. Reservation recommended on summer weekends.
Nearby trails
From Platres, other Troodos trails lead:
- Millomeri Trail (2 km, easy, small Millomeri waterfall)
- Kaledonia Trail (extension — to the center of Platres)
- Artemis Trail (7 km around Olympus, starts 15 km further)
Platres is a good base for trekkers — a dozen or so small hotels and guesthouses at a price of 40–90 EUR/night. Search for accommodation in Platres on CyprusBooker and compare options with a pool.
