Avakas Gorge — Hiking in Akamas in 2 Hours. Route, Water, Equipment
Avakas Gorge is one of the most beautiful gorges in Cyprus and simultaneously one of the most underrated. While tourists throng the more famous Troodos trails, Avakas receives a fraction of the traffic — yet offers views that are hard to describe without a photograph: 30-meter limestone walls squeezing down to 2 meters, vegetation clinging to the rocks, fuchsia-colored oleanders blooming between boulders. In August, the stream bed is dry — but the trail is accessible and beautiful year-round.
Where is Avakas Gorge
The gorge is located on the western coast of the Akamas peninsula, 22 km north of Coral Bay, 32 km from the center of Paphos. GPS coordinates for the entrance: 34.9298° N, 32.3507° E.
Directions: From Coral Bay, drive north on road B7 (asphalt) towards Agios Georgios Peyias. After the village, turn west onto a dirt road marked with a sign "Avakas Gorge" (green sign with white letters). The dirt road: approx. 3 km, passable by a regular passenger car (slowly, carefully around stones on the road).
Parking: Small parking area at the gorge entrance, free, approx. 30 vehicles. On weekends during the spring season, space may be limited — arrive before 9:00 AM.
Route — Detailed Description
Trail Type: Out-and-back (one entrance and exit). No loop. Length: 2.5 km one way (5 km total) Elevation Gain: Minimal — the gorge runs along (the former) riverbed, total elevation gain approx. +50 m Time: 45–60 min one way, approx. 2 hours total including photos and breaks Difficulty: Easy / Moderate — no steep ascents, but hopping over rocks, places with slippery ground
Route Profile:
- 0–500 m: Wide rocky bed, open sky, easy walking on flat rocks
- 500–1200 m: Gorge walls begin to narrow (5–10 m wide), oleanders appear
- 1200–1800 m: Culmination of the gorge — walls 20–30 m high, width 2–4 m. Dark and cool even in July
- 1800–2500 m: The gorge gradually opens up, the trail becomes more overgrown
- 2500 m: End of the official trail at a large rock blocking the passage (can climb further for advanced hikers, but not recommended without equipment)
Water on the Trail
During the rainy season (December–March), a stream flows in the riverbed — places up to the knee. Waterproof boots or trekking sandals required.
In summer (June–September): riverbed dry or with puddles. Entry possible in regular trekking boots.
Important: Do not enter the gorge during or immediately after rain — sudden water surges from brief showers can be dangerous.
No drinking water available along the trail — the gorge entrance is the last point where you can refill your water bottle. Minimum amount per person: 1 liter.
