Akamas National Park — 4x4 Route Lara-Aphrodite Baths with Photo Stops
The Akamas peninsula is 230 km² of wilderness on the western edge of Cyprus — no hotels, no asphalt roads beyond the Baths of Aphrodite, no supermarkets. Akamas National Park (formally established in 2011 after years of environmentalist lobbying) protects habitats for sea turtles (Caretta caretta), mouflon, endemic plants, and migratory birds. A popular jeep route from Lara to the Baths of Aphrodite (or vice versa) runs through the heart of this area — 22 km along the coast with views that are hard to forget.

Key Photo Stops
Stop 1: Viewpoint above Lara Bay (km 0–2)
From the Lara Bay parking area, the road immediately climbs to a cliff above the beach. After 1.5 km, a scenic turn — Lara bay seen from above as a map: white sand, turquoise water, rocky promontory on the left. Golden hour (7:30–9:00) gives long shadows on the beach and vibrant colors of the sea.
Equipment: 70–200 mm telephoto lens for close-ups of the beach from above. Polarizer essential.
Stop 2: Middle Akamas Cliffs (km 6–9)
The road runs closest to the sea — several natural viewpoints between boulders. Water near the cliffs incredibly blue (80 m drop to the sea). Wind usually strong.
Caution: Stay away from the edge — limestone-basalt rock is fragile, no barriers.
Stop 3: Smygies (km 12)
Expansive plateau with a 270° panorama — you can see both the western and eastern coasts of Akamas. Park information board. Good place for a lunch from a thermos.
Stop 4: Fontana Amorosa / Blue Lagoon (km 16)
Drive to the bay. Detailed description in a separate article "Blue Lagoon Akamas".
Stop 5: Baths of Aphrodite (km 22)
End of the route. Parking, toilets, cafe. Near the pool of Aphrodite (GPS 35.0593° N, 32.3264° E): a small, shaded pool surrounded by bougainvillea and fig trees. Legend says that Aphrodite bathed here in the upper pool, drawing water from a spring. The pool is 2–3 m in diameter, about 50 cm deep — swimming is prohibited (sacred place + ecosystem protection). But you can wash your face.
Trail from Baths of Aphrodite: The Aphrodite Trail (7.5 km one way) and the Adonis Trail (7 km, similar) start from this parking area.
Wildlife Along the Way
Birds: The Akamas route is on the main migration route. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October): raptor migration — hawks, buzzards, falcons in numbers of thousands. Paphos Cape lighthouse nearby is one of the best points for observing migrations in the Mediterranean Sea.
Mouflon: Rare, but seen at dawn along trails above 400 m. Active in the morning and evening.
Snakes: Cyprus has several species, including the Cypriot adder (Macrovipera lebetina) — the only venomous snake on the island. They can be found along the gravel road in Akamas. Do not get out of the car into wild bushes carelessly. In case of a bite: SOS, tel. 112, Paphos hospital (tel. +357 26 803100).
Park Rules — What Not to Do
- Overnight camping in the park: Prohibited (protected area)
- Open fires: Absolutely prohibited (risk of fire in the dry summer)
- Collecting plants and minerals: Prohibited
- Driving off-road outside designated roads: Prohibited (fine 1000 EUR)
- Noise (loud music from the car): Informal, but spoils the experience for others
