Kolios Winery sits in the village of Agros at around 1,100 metres in the Pitsilia region — one of the highest-altitude wine villages on Cyprus, on the eastern flank of the Troodos massif. Agros is famous for two things: the high-altitude wine production and the rose-water cooperatives that produce traditional Cypriot rose products from the local rosa damascena flowers. Kolios is one of the more visible of the village's small wineries, with a working modern cellar and a tasting room.
The vineyards work the indigenous mountain grapes — Xynisteri, Maratheftiko, Mavro — at altitudes between 900 and 1,200 metres on the volcanic-amphibolite soils. The mountain conditions create wines with significant freshness and structure: cooler ripening, slower sugar accumulation, retained acidity. The white Xynisteri in particular shows the freshness that altitude permits, and the Maratheftiko is structured. The estate produces around 30,000-50,000 bottles annually.
The visit is enhanced by the Agros context. The Niki Agros rose-water cooperative is one of the village's signature traditions — visitors can see the spring rose-petal harvest and the traditional copper-still distillation process. The village itself is a substantial Pitsilia mountain village with several restored stone houses, the historic Agros Chapel, and a cluster of family tavernas serving traditional Cypriot mountain food.
