Kyrenia (Girne) Harbour is the medieval port at the foot of the Pentadaktylos range on the north coast, in the territory of Northern Cyprus. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful small harbours in the Mediterranean — a horseshoe-shaped basin with a stone breakwater, fishing boats and small leisure craft moored against the quay, restored 14th-century stone houses arrayed around the inner curve, and the substantial Byzantine-Lusignan castle anchoring the eastern entrance. The setting against the limestone mountains behind makes Kyrenia one of the consistent photographic stops on any Northern Cyprus visit.
Kyrenia Castle dominates the eastern side of the harbour. Built in stages from the 7th century AD as a Byzantine fortress, expanded by the Lusignans in the 14th century, modified by the Venetians in the 16th, and then by the Ottomans, the castle is now open as a museum with several specialty exhibits. The most important is the Shipwreck Museum — housing the conserved hull and cargo of the 4th-century BC Kyrenia Ship, a Greek merchant vessel found wrecked off the north coast in 1965 and excavated in one of the most important Mediterranean underwater archaeological projects of the 20th century. The hull is an extraordinary survival — partly intact, displayed in a climate-controlled glass case, with the original cargo of amphorae alongside.
The harbour itself has been thoughtfully restored — the stone houses arrayed in front of the castle now host fish tavernas, small hotels, and shops, while remaining recognisably traditional. Working fishing boats still come and go.
Insider tips. Crossing into Northern Cyprus requires passport and appropriate insurance. Allow at least 2-3 hours for the harbour and castle. The Shipwreck Museum is the must-see; allow 60 minutes. Sunset along the harbour quay is the photographic peak — go for an early dinner. The harbour-side restaurants are a tier above the standard Northern Cyprus tourist offering — Niazi's, Hilarion, and Set are reliable.
Combinations. Pair with St Hilarion Castle (15 minutes — dramatic mountain fortress), Bellapais Abbey (15 minutes east — Crusader monastery), and the Karpas Peninsula. A 2-3 day Northern Cyprus visit naturally uses Kyrenia as the base.
Bring. Comfortable shoes, casual evening wear, passport, hire-car papers if applicable, euros and Turkish lira (small change). When. Year-round; spring and autumn are particularly fine. Sunset is consistently the best photographic moment. Kyrenia Harbour is the visual signature of Northern Cyprus and the natural base for any visit there.
