O atrakcji

Cape Drepanon — also known as Agios Georgios Pegeias — is the cliff headland 8 km north of Coral Bay where two pieces of Cypriot history sit alongside one another: the ruins of an early Christian basilica complex from the 6th century AD, and the small whitewashed chapel of Agios Georgios that has been a local landmark for centuries. The setting on the high cliff above the western Mediterranean gives 270° sea views and is one of the most rewarding short stops on the Pafos coast.

The archaeological site preserves the foundations of three early Christian basilicas built between the 5th and 7th centuries AD, when this stretch of coast was a small port-town serving the wider Pafos district. The largest basilica — Basilica A — has substantial floor mosaics depicting fish, marine creatures, and geometric panels (partly visible in situ, with several fragments now in the Pafos Archaeological Museum). The complex was destroyed in the 7th-century Arab raids and never rebuilt at this scale.

The Agios Georgios chapel that gives the headland its modern name is a small later church (probably 18th-19th century) on the higher ground, simple stone with whitewashed walls and the typical cross on the dome. The combined effect — ancient basilica ruins with mosaic floors, modern chapel above, the dramatic cliffs and sea below — makes Cape Drepanon a particularly atmospheric stop.

What to do. Walk the marked paths around the basilica foundations, photograph the mosaic fragments visible under glass shelters, climb to the chapel above, photograph the cliff and sea panorama. Allow 60 minutes. There are small tavernas on the access road back toward Pegeia village for lunch.

Insider tips. The site is exposed and unshaded; sun protection essential. The mosaic shelters protect the most important panels from sun damage but provide little shade for visitors. Sturdy shoes for the uneven path. The cliff edges are unfenced; with children, keep close. Free entry. Photography is welcome.

Combinations. Pair with the Pafos Sea Caves cliff walk (5 minutes south — wave-eroded limestone formations), with Coral Bay (10 minutes south), with Maa-Palaeokastro archaeological site (10 minutes south — Bronze Age fortified settlement), or with Lara Beach (longer drive, 4x4 ideal). A complete Pafos coastal-archaeology day.

Bring. Hat, water, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, camera, swimsuit if continuing to a Coral Bay swim. When. Spring and autumn give the most pleasant walking; summer mornings only. Sunset is dramatic. Cape Drepanon is one of the consistently rewarding small stops on the western coast and a quietly important early-Christian archaeological site.
