Avakas Gorge is one of the most dramatic natural features of the Akamas peninsula — a 3 km canyon carved by the Avgas river into the western limestone slopes, with vertical walls 30 metres high and a narrow streambed at the bottom that walkers follow on foot. The gorge sits within the protected Akamas National Park, accessed from the unpaved coastal track south of Lara Beach.
The geology is striking. The river has cut a near-vertical-walled slot through the limestone, with the rock layers visible in horizontal bands and several small caves at the higher levels. The microclimate inside the gorge is cool and damp — fern and laurel grow on the lower walls, plane trees fill the streambed shade, and several locally endemic plants (including Cyprus ophrys orchids in spring) flourish in the shelter. The walls themselves are home to nesting raptors and (in legend) the occasional Cypriot wild goat.
The walk is the experience. The trail follows the streambed for around 3 km — sometimes on a clear path, sometimes scrambling along the bank, sometimes wading through shallow water in winter and spring. The narrowest passages of the gorge — where the walls close to within 4-5 metres — are the photographic moments. The trail ends at a sheltered amphitheatre where the gorge opens out; you walk back the same way.
Insider tips. Allow 2-3 hours round trip. Sturdy walking shoes essential — the trail is uneven, sometimes wet, with rock-hopping in places. After heavy rain the river runs higher and the walk is more challenging (and occasionally unsafe — flash floods are real). Best months are March-May (water flowing, wildflowers, manageable level) and September-October (dry walking, wildflowers in second flush). Avoid summer midday — the gorge interior is shaded but the access from the road is exposed.
Combinations. Pair with Lara Beach (15 minutes north on the unpaved track, 4x4 ideal) for a wild-coast day, with the Aphrodite Trail at the Baths of Aphrodite (longer drive around the peninsula), with the Akamas viewpoint, or with Coral Bay (40 minutes south). The Akamas full-day visit naturally includes the gorge.
Bring. Sturdy walking shoes (essential), 1.5L water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, layered clothing, camera, paper map, swimsuit if walking in spring. When. March-May and September-November. The gorge is one of the most dramatic landscape features in Cyprus and a serious half-day walk for moderately fit visitors.
