O atrakcji

Panagia tou Sinti Monastery sits in the wild Pafos Forest valley above the village of Pentalia, on the western slopes of the Troodos. It was founded in the early 16th century during the Venetian period, probably 1542, as a small monastic retreat in one of the most remote valleys on the island. After centuries of decline it was abandoned in the 1950s, reduced to ruin, and has been partly restored since the 2000s as a UNESCO-funded conservation project (the monastery is listed in the UNESCO 'Painted Churches' supplementary survey though not formally inscribed).

The setting is extraordinary. The monastery sits in a deep valley surrounded by pine, oak, and Mediterranean scrub, with a small river (the Xeros river, not always running) below. The drive in is on a partly-unpaved road that descends into the valley — phone signal disappears, the landscape closes in, and you arrive at a small enclosed compound that feels like a frontier outpost.

The architecture is the focus. The katholikon is a single-aisled stone church with a steeply-pitched timber roof — one of the few Venetian-period monastic churches surviving on Cyprus. The wall paintings, much damaged but in places intact, are 16th-17th century post-Byzantine work showing the influence of the Cretan school. The surrounding monastic cells, refectory, and outbuildings are partly restored. There is no resident monastic community — the site is maintained by the Department of Antiquities and the local diocese.

Insider tips. Open daily during normal site hours; admission is free. The drive in requires patience — narrow road, occasional rough sections, allow 30+ minutes from the main road. Sturdy shoes for the uneven monastery grounds. Phone signal is patchy. Bring water and food — there are no facilities. The site is rarely busy, and on most days you may have it to yourself.

Combinations. Pair with Vouni Panayia Winery (40 minutes north), with Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery (35 minutes north — for monastic comparison), with Vasilikon Winery (30 minutes north-west), or as part of a longer Pafos Forest exploration. A serious back-roads day.

Bring. Sturdy shoes, water, food/snacks, modest dress (covered shoulders/knees), camera, paper map, sunscreen, hat. When. Spring (March-May) for wildflowers and the river potentially flowing; autumn (October-November) for clear cool weather. Panagia tou Sinti is one of the more remote and atmospheric monastic sites on Cyprus and a genuinely hidden destination.
