Governor's Beach East Cove

Governor's Beach East Cove is the eastern (and quieter) end of the Governor's Beach string of coves on the south coast, 30 km east of Limassol. Where the central Governor's cove has the main fish tavern (Andreas) and the loungers, the eastern coves are a series of smaller, quieter, partly-naturist bays under chalky white cliffs. The water is the same unnaturally turquoise as the central beach (the white cliffs and white pebble seabed reflect the light) but the crowds are markedly smaller.

The geology is the same throughout the Governor's Beach string — pure white limestone-marl cliffs of the Pissouri formation, fragmenting into pale grey shingle on the shore, creating water that turns brilliant turquoise in the shallows. The eastern coves are reached by walking 200-500 metres along the cliff-top path from the central Governor's parking area; access to the water itself is by short stair-paths down the cliffs.

The eastern coves are popular with naturists in season (informal rather than designated; respect everyone's choice). Snorkelling along the rocky points at the cove edges is moderate. There are no facilities — bring everything you need.

What to do. Walk the cliff path, choose a cove, swim. Photograph the white cliffs and turquoise water (mid-morning or late afternoon for the best light). Snorkel at the rocky cove ends. Pack lunch — there is no food service at the eastern coves, the central beach is 5-10 minutes' walk back.

Insider tips. The cliff edges are unstable in places — keep distance from the lip. The descent paths to the water are steep and rough; sturdy shoes essential, water shoes in your daypack. Mid-week the eastern coves can be empty; weekends bring some local visitors. The whole stretch is exposed; sun protection mandatory.

Combinations. Pair with the central Governor's Beach (Andreas Tavern for lunch — Sundays are busy with Cypriot families), with Choirokoitia (15 minutes north — Neolithic UNESCO site), with the Larnaca Salt Lake (25 minutes east), or with a continued drive to Larnaca.

Bring. Sturdy shoes for the cliff path, water shoes for the pebble entry, 2L water per person, sunscreen, hat, swimsuit, towel, lunch and snacks, snorkel kit, bin bag for your waste, camera. When. May-June and September-October are perfect; July-August acceptable thanks to the lower noise.
