Faros Beach (Cape Kiti Beach) — named for the lighthouse (faros) on the nearby Cape Kiti headland — is one of the longer, quieter, more rural beaches of the southern coast, around 15 km south-west of Larnaca. The beach runs roughly 2 km along the open coast, with pale sand and small pebble shore, sheltered from the worst northern wind by the gentle headland. There is no resort development behind it — a string of two or three rural fish tavernas, several private holiday houses, and otherwise just open scrubland and small olive groves.
The beach is consistently Blue Flag, lifeguarded in season at the central section, with limited sunbed concessions. The water is clean and clear; the seabed mostly sand with patches of small pebble. The slope into the water is gentle, suitable for families. The lighthouse on Cape Kiti — built in 1864 and still operating — is a 10-minute walk from the central beach and gives a small headland view.
The fish tavernas are why locals come. Captain's, Iliada Beach Tavern, and Fishing Tavern are long-running family operations buying direct from the morning catch and serving straightforwardly excellent grilled bream, mullet, octopus and the Cypriot fish-soup. Sunday lunch is the busy peak with Larnaca and Nicosia families.
What to do. Swim, eat fish, walk the long beach to the lighthouse, photograph. The beach is not a watersports destination — there are no major concessions. Snorkelling at the rocky points at the western end is moderate. The Angeloktisti church at Kiti village (3 minutes inland) is one of Cyprus' more important Byzantine churches and naturally combines with a beach visit.
Insider tips. Sunday lunch books up — call ahead at the busier tavernas. Mid-week the beach is yours. Water shoes for the pebble entry sensible. The lighthouse walk is best at sunset. Parking is generous along the back-road.
Combinations. Pair with Angeloktisti Church at Kiti (3 minutes — the famous 6th-century mosaic), with Hala Sultan Tekke (15 minutes east), with Larnaca Salt Lake, or with Choirokoitia (25 minutes north). A complete Larnaca-region cultural-and-coastal day.
Bring. Water shoes, sunscreen, hat, swimsuit, towel, water, cash for the tavernas. When. May-October. June and September are the gold standard. Faros Beach is the slow, unspoiled Larnaca-district beach and one of the south-east coast's better-kept secrets.
