Pernera Beach sits at the northern end of the Protaras coastal stretch, around 3 km north of Fig Tree Bay. It is a long sandy crescent (around 700 metres) with calm shallow water, a small working fishing harbour at the southern end, and a notably more family-quiet feel than the central Protaras beaches. The water is consistently turquoise on calm days and the sand is fine and pale.
The beach is Blue Flag certified, lifeguarded in season (June-September), with sunbed-and-umbrella concessions (around 7-10 EUR per pair per day) and a small line of beach restaurants behind the dunes. Watersports operations are present but lower-key than at Nissi Beach — pedalo, banana boat, paddleboard. The slope into the water is gentle for the first 30 metres before any drop, making it one of the best family-beach options on the eastern coast.
The small fishing harbour at the southern end of the beach is part of the appeal. Working caique boats moored against the stone quay, fishermen mending nets, the smell of fresh catch in early morning. The seafood tavernas behind the harbour are reliable for lunch — Pernera Tavern and Captain Andreas are the long-running classics.
What to do. Swim, sunbathe, walk the long beach end-to-end (15 minutes), eat fish at one of the harbour-side tavernas, take a glass-bottom boat tour from the small jetty (15-20 EUR per person, 90 minutes). Snorkelling at the rocky points at the northern end is moderate.
Insider tips. Pernera fills more slowly than Fig Tree Bay and stays calmer through the day. Mid-week mornings are blissful in shoulder season. Sunday lunch at the harbour tavernas is busy with Cypriot families. Parking is generous behind the beach. Pernera Tavern is the more locally-loved address; book in summer.
Combinations. Pair with Fig Tree Bay (3 minutes south), Sunrise Beach (5 minutes south), Konnos Bay and Cape Greco (15 minutes south), or with a Protaras evening dinner. A complete Protaras coastal day.
Bring. Sunscreen, snorkel kit, hat, swimsuit, towel, water, cash for the harbour tavernas. When. June and September are the gold standard; May and October give cooler sea but emptier beach. Pernera is the calmer family alternative on the Protaras stretch and one of the consistently good east-coast swims.
