Toxeftra Beach is the more remote sister of Lara Beach, sitting 4 km further north along the unpaved coastal track of the western Akamas peninsula. Where Lara is a long curving sandy beach, Toxeftra is a series of smaller pebble-and-coarse-sand coves under low cliffs of pillow-lava and limestone, with even less infrastructure (essentially none) and even fewer visitors. It is one of the very quietest beaches on Cyprus — most days you have it to yourself.
The beach is part of the protected Akamas national zone and shares the Lara-Toxeftra green and loggerhead turtle nesting area — one of the most important Mediterranean turtle nesting sites east of Greece. Marked nests appear from June onward; the same conservation rules apply (no lights at night, no disturbing markers, no driving on the sand). The water is clear, dropping quickly to swimmable depth, with rocky points at each end of the coves giving good light snorkelling.
The setting is the reason to make the effort. Behind the beach the cliffs rise into Akamas scrub — juniper, thyme, sage, occasional stunted oak. The sound is sea and wind only; no music, no engines (other than the very occasional 4x4). On a calm September morning Toxeftra is a kind of Mediterranean rarity — a developed-country beach that is still genuinely wild.
What to do. Swim, walk, snorkel. Bring everything you need (water, food, sunscreen, shade) — there is nothing here. The northern end has slightly finer sand; the southern end is more pebble. The cliff path connects both Toxeftra and Lara to the unpaved coastal track.
Insider tips. A 4x4 is essential — ordinary hire cars cannot reliably manage the track, especially after rain. Boats from Latchi (40-50 min) sometimes anchor offshore but do not always land. Pack out everything you bring in. There is no phone signal in many of the inland sections; tell someone where you are going. The path down to the water at each cove is steep and rocky — sturdy shoes essential.
Combinations. Pair with Lara Beach (4 km south on the same track), with the Avakas Gorge (15 minutes south on the access road), with the Akamas viewpoint, or with a coastal boat tour from Latchi for the Blue Lagoon and Akamas western coast. Toxeftra is part of any serious Akamas-day itinerary.
Bring. 4x4 vehicle (or boat access), 2L+ water per person, food, water shoes, reef-safe sunscreen, hat, snorkel kit, towel, bin bag for your waste, sun umbrella if you want shade. When. May-October; June and September are perfect. Avoid July-August midday and avoid the day after rain. Toxeftra is the wildest accessible beach on Cyprus and the place you go to feel the empty Mediterranean.
