O atrakcji

The Larnaca Dive Centre and similar PADI-certified operators run daily trips out to the wreck of the MS Zenobia — a 172-metre Swedish roll-on-roll-off cargo ferry that sank on its maiden voyage on 7 June 1980 in 42 metres of water 1.5 km off Larnaca harbour. The wreck has been consistently rated one of the world's top ten wrecks for recreational scuba diving (regularly placed in international top-five lists), and the Larnaca dive operation around it is one of the most active in the eastern Mediterranean.

The Zenobia's significance is the combination of size, accessibility and condition. The ship rests on its port side, with the hull rising from 42 m on the deepest point up to 16 m at the topside, and the cargo (108 lorries with full loads, intended for Athens and Tartous) still in place — chained to the now-vertical deck, a surreal underwater car park. Penetration dives into the ship's interior reveal cabins, the bridge, the engine room, and the loading decks; external dives along the hull take in the propellers, anchor, and superstructure. The water is clear (visibility 15-30 m typical) and warm (22-25°C in summer); marine life on the wreck includes barracuda, grouper, jacks, moray eels, octopus and the occasional turtle.

Dives on the Zenobia are not for beginners. Open Water (PADI 18m) certification is the minimum; Advanced Open Water (30m) is needed for the deeper sections; Wreck Diver and Deep Diver specialties are recommended for penetration dives. Most Larnaca dive shops run two-tank Zenobia trips for around 100-150 EUR including equipment and lunch.

Insider tips. Book ahead — popular weekends fill up. Bring your own dive log and certification card. The boat ride out is short (15-20 minutes) but the surface conditions can be choppy on windy days; take seasickness precautions if needed. Dive operators all carry rental gear but bringing your own mask and fins is more comfortable. The post-dive meze on the boat ride back is a small local tradition.

Combinations. Pair with a non-diving day in Larnaca — Foinikoudes promenade, Saint Lazarus Church, Larnaca Castle, Hala Sultan Tekke. A 2-3 day Larnaca dive trip is the natural scale; many divers come for a week.

Bring. Dive certification, log book, mask and fins (rentable but personal kit is better), seasickness medication if needed, towel, dry clothes, sunscreen, water. When. Year-round but May-October is the comfortable diving season. June and September give the best balance of warm water, calm sea, and tolerable boat traffic. The Zenobia is the world-class dive destination on Cyprus and the reason many serious divers choose Larnaca over the more famous south-coast resorts.
