Ocean Aquarium Protaras is one of the few dedicated aquaria on Cyprus and the largest — a mid-sized family attraction in the heart of Protaras with around 25 main tanks displaying Mediterranean, Indo-Pacific, Caribbean and freshwater species, plus a substantial outdoor tropical garden with parrots, flamingos, alligators (yes, in Cyprus) and turtles. It is genuinely educational — the wall labels are bilingual and reasonably scientific — and a useful family stop on a hot day or for visitors with younger children.
The indoor tank circuit covers the standard biome zones. Mediterranean tanks display species visitors might encounter snorkelling at Cape Greco — wrasse, parrotfish, sand smelt, octopus, occasional small barracuda and grouper. Tropical Indo-Pacific tanks have the colourful reef species — clownfish, surgeonfish, butterflyfish, lionfish — that Cyprus visitors might know from holiday-aquarium tradition. Smaller tanks include freshwater Amazon, jellyfish, seahorses, and a touch-pool with starfish and small rays. The largest tank is the central reef tank with sharks (small, harmless species).
The outdoor garden is the secondary attraction. Parrots in tropical-bird enclosures (some are free-flying in the canopy at certain hours), small crocodiles and alligators in pool enclosures, flamingos in a pond, large land tortoises, and a substantial tropical-plant collection. Family children find this section more engaging than the dim indoor tanks.
Insider tips. Allow 90-120 minutes. Entry is around 17 EUR per adult, 9 EUR child. The aquarium gets full on weekend mornings and rainy days; mid-week off-peak is best. Photography is permitted. There is a small café and gift shop. The crocodile feeding times (11:00 and 14:00) are a popular stop for children.
Combinations. Pair with a beach day at nearby Fig Tree Bay or Konnos Bay (5-10 minutes), with Cape Greco (15 minutes), or with the Ayia Napa attractions for a complete eastern coast family day. The aquarium is itself a half-day visit.
Bring. Light layers (the aquarium is air-conditioned and dim, the outdoor garden is hot), comfortable shoes, casual clothes, sunscreen and hat for the outdoor section. When. Year-round; the aquarium is a particularly useful rainy-day or hot-summer-afternoon option. Open roughly 10:00-18:00. Ocean Aquarium Protaras is the small but genuinely curated family attraction of the eastern coast — better than its modest scale suggests.
