O atrakcji

Saranda Kolones — 'Forty Columns' in Greek, named for the granite columns of its courtyard — is the dramatic ruin of a 13th-century Frankish castle within the Paphos Archaeological Park. Built around 1200 AD by the Lusignan kings on the foundations of an earlier Byzantine fortress, it was conceived as a major castle commanding the harbour of Nea Paphos, with concentric walls, eight towers, and a substantial central court. It survived less than 25 years — destroyed in the great earthquake of 1222 AD that ruined coastal Cyprus, and never rebuilt.

The ruin is what makes the site interesting. The earthquake collapsed the upper structures completely but preserved the foundations and the lower courses of walls — and notably the granite columns (re-used from earlier Roman buildings) that formed the colonnade of the inner courtyard. The columns survive as a dramatic series of vertical shafts in the field of fallen masonry, photographically striking and giving the site its informal name.

Excavations since 1957 have revealed substantial details of the castle's plan: the central donjon with its rounded corners, the eight outer towers (each housing a chapel or guard chamber), the moat with stone-faced banks, the great gate-house with its drawbridge mechanism, and the walls with their characteristic mediaeval-Mediterranean dressed stone. The site is part of the wider Paphos UNESCO Archaeological Park ticket.

Insider tips. Allow 30-45 minutes. The ruin is unshaded and exposed — combine with the surrounding Archaeological Park for shade in the mosaic houses. Sturdy shoes; the rubble is uneven. Photography is welcome. The granite columns photograph particularly well in late afternoon golden light.

Combinations. Saranda Kolones is part of the Paphos Archaeological Park — the natural combination is with the famous mosaic houses (House of Dionysos, House of Theseus, House of Aion), the agora, and the odeon. Pair with the Tombs of the Kings (10 minutes by car) and the harbour for the complete Paphos UNESCO day.

Bring. Hat, water, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, camera. When. Spring and autumn for comfortable walking; summer mornings only. Saranda Kolones is the medieval interlude in the otherwise classical Paphos park — a 13th-century castle frozen in mid-collapse by an earthquake almost 800 years ago.
