Columbia Beach

Columbia Beach is the western end of Pissouri Bay, a sheltered south-coast crescent where the chalky white cliffs of Cape Aspro begin and the bay narrows toward fishing-boat moorings. The beach is named after the Columbia Beach Resort that occupies the immediate hinterland — but the beach itself is a public Blue Flag bay, accessible to non-resort visitors, with fine pale pebble-and-coarse-sand shore, exceptionally clear water (the white Pissouri-formation marl reflects the light), and a sheltered position that makes it one of the calmest swims on the south coast.

The bay sits at the foot of the cliffs of Cape Aspro, the dramatic white headland that closes Pissouri Bay's western horizon. The slope into the water is gradual, the seabed clean, and the visibility on a calm summer day is several metres. There are sunbed concessions managed by the resort (around 8-10 EUR per pair), lifeguards in season, and a small beach restaurant. Watersports concessions (banana boat, pedalo, paddleboard) operate from the central section.

The Columbia Beach Resort and its sister Columbia Beachotel occupy the immediate hinterland — both are upmarket resort hotels with restaurants, spas and beachfront access, but the beach itself is open to the public via the road in. The eastern end of Pissouri Bay (the central beach with the family tavernas) is a 10-minute walk along the shore.

What to do. Swim and snorkel — the western rocky flank near the cliffs is the snorkel spot for sand smelt, wrasse, occasional bream. Walk west along the cliff path toward Cape Aspro (1 km, 25 minutes one way, the marked walking route). Lunch at the beach restaurant or at one of the Columbia Resort outlets if open to non-guests. Combine with central Pissouri Bay for the full bay experience.

Insider tips. Water shoes for the pebbly entry. The cliff path west is genuinely spectacular but exposed — go before 10:00 in summer or late afternoon. The Columbia Resort restaurants are open to non-guests for lunch/dinner — pricier than the village tavernas but with the same view. Parking at the beach is paid in season.

Combinations. Pair with central Pissouri Bay (10 minutes' walk along the beach), with Cape Aspro coastal viewpoint (cliff path), with Pissouri village (5 minutes — the Bunch of Grapes tavern is the long-recommended dinner address), or with Petra tou Romiou (15 minutes west).

Bring. Water shoes, sunscreen, hat, snorkel kit, water, casual smart wear if eating at the resort restaurants. When. May, June, September and October are the best months. July-August is busier but the bay is generous enough to absorb the crowds. Columbia Beach is the calmer, slightly more refined alternative within Pissouri Bay and one of the south coast's quieter pleasures.
