The Pierides Museum is one of the older and finest private museum collections in Cyprus, housed in the restored 19th-century Pierides family mansion on Zinonos Kitieos Street in Larnaca old town, three minutes' walk from the Foinikoudes seafront. The collection was assembled over four generations of the Pierides family — a wealthy Larnaca merchant family — beginning with Demetrios Pierides in the 1830s, and donated to the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation in the 1970s with the building. It now operates as a public museum with consistently rewarding presentation.
The collection covers around 4,000 years of Cypriot history with particular strengths in ceramics, terracotta figurines, and decorative arts. Highlights include: a remarkable collection of Bronze Age red polished ware (3rd millennium BC); Mycenaean pottery showing the early Greek presence; Phoenician finds from Kition; classical Greek and Cypriot sculpture; an exceptional series of Hellenistic terracottas including the famous 'Pierides figurines'; Roman glass; medieval Frankish and Byzantine ceramics; and a small but excellent collection of Cypriot folk art including textiles, costumes, and traditional silverware. The museum building itself — the Pierides mansion — is a beautifully restored example of mid-19th-century Larnaca architecture.
The displays are careful and unhurried, with bilingual signage. The museum has a small inner courtyard café-garden, and the restored library room with its original bookcases is a small architectural pleasure in itself.
