Parko Paliatso Luna Park (locally just 'the Luna Park' or 'Paliatso') is Ayia Napa's traditional summer-evening funfair, on Nissi Avenue between the resort centre and Nissi Beach. It opens in May and runs through October as a classic Mediterranean carnival operation — a ferris wheel as the visual landmark, dodgems, carousels, the Sling Shot reverse-bungee that propels riders to 90 metres in two seconds (the loudest attraction; you can hear the screams from a block away), pirate-ship swings, and a long parade of side-stalls with darts, hoopla, candyfloss, churros and hot dogs.
The Sling Shot is the Luna Park's signature ride — a two-tower compressed-air-launched cage that fires riders nearly straight up; a tradition has emerged for the rider's panic videos to end up on social media (often as wedding-night dares). It is genuinely intense and not for the nervous. The rest of the park is family-friendly: a children's small-rides area, the ferris wheel for sunset views, several arcade games, and a small bar terrace.
The park is open from sunset to past midnight in high summer; in shoulder season it operates shorter evening hours and is closed on weekdays. Admission is free; rides are paid individually (around 4-8 EUR each) or via wristband bundles. The Luna Park is a beloved Ayia Napa summer institution and remains one of the few low-tech, traditional carnival operations in the eastern Mediterranean.
Insider tips. Buy a wristband if planning multiple rides (substantial savings). Friday and Saturday are peak nights with families and pre-club teenagers. Mid-week is quieter. Sunset is the photogenic moment for the ferris wheel. Avoid eating at the in-park stalls if you have other options — the resort restaurants on Nissi Avenue are better and not much further.
Combinations. Luna Park is the natural early-evening stop after a day at Nissi Beach — beach, dinner, funfair, optional clubs after. For families, a 2-hour stop is the typical visit. The Aphrodite Waterpark next door is the daytime water complement.
Bring. Cash for rides and snacks, casual evening wear, a hoodie for cooler late evenings, sunscreen if going at sunset. When. May-October. June and September give pleasant evening temperatures and full operation. July-August is the busy peak. Luna Park is the Ayia Napa family-evening institution and a slice of un-ironic carnival tradition.
