Ancient Kition is the city under modern Larnaca — a continuously occupied Phoenician and Cypriot settlement from the 13th century BC into the Roman period. The Phoenicians settled here from around the 9th century BC, making Kition one of the principal Phoenician cities of the eastern Mediterranean (alongside Tyre and Sidon), and the city's bilingual Greek-Phoenician inscriptions are among the most important documents for Phoenician epigraphy.
Two main archaeological areas are open to visitors. Kathari (the Sacred Area), in the modern Kition quarter of Larnaca, has the foundations of five Late Bronze Age temples, including a major temple to Astarte (the Phoenician goddess identified with Aphrodite) with massive stone foundations and a series of altars. Kition Cyclopean Walls preserve a section of the original Bronze Age fortifications with characteristic massive stone construction. Both sites have raised walkways and good signage.
Most major finds from Kition are displayed in the Larnaca District Archaeological Museum (close by) and the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia — the bilingual inscriptions, the bronze hoards, the famous lion statues. Kition was also the birthplace of Zeno of Citium, founder of the Stoic school of philosophy in Athens — a small commemorative bust marks the spot near the central excavation.
Insider tips. The two main archaeological zones are a 5-minute drive apart. The Kathari sacred area is the more substantial visit (60-90 minutes); the Cyclopean Walls is a shorter stop (30 minutes). Entry to each is around 2.50 EUR. The sites are partly shaded but still hot in summer afternoons; mornings are the right time. Combine with the Larnaca District Archaeological Museum (where the major finds are displayed) for full context.
Combinations. Pair with the Larnaca District Archaeological Museum (the museum complement to the field site), Hala Sultan Tekke (15 minutes — Islamic and Phoenician layers in close proximity), the Larnaca Salt Lake, the Foinikoudes promenade, and the Church of Saint Lazarus. A complete Larnaca history day.
Bring. Hat, water, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, a printed leaflet from the Department of Antiquities (signage is good but background is light). When. Spring, autumn, or winter mornings; avoid summer afternoons. Ancient Kition is the buried Phoenician layer of modern Larnaca — partly visible, archaeologically important, and a corrective to anyone who thinks Cyprus' ancient history is purely Greek.
