O atrakcji

Larnaca Salt Lake is a complex of four interconnecting saline lagoons covering some 2.2 km² immediately south-west of Larnaca city, between the airport and Hala Sultan Tekke. It is one of the most important Mediterranean wetlands and a Ramsar site of international importance — particularly as a winter feeding ground for greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), which arrive in flocks of 5,000-12,000 birds from November through March, feeding on the brine shrimp that thrive in the lake's hypersaline water.

The lake is seasonal in the extreme — full of brackish water in winter and spring, and almost completely dry by late summer when the salt crystallises and the lakebed turns into a vast white pan. The salt was commercially harvested from antiquity until 1986, when the practice ended for environmental reasons. The Salt Lake walking trail (around 4 km, signposted from the Hala Sultan Tekke car park) runs along the lake's western and southern shores with several wooden observation decks for birdwatching.

Beyond flamingos, the lake hosts pelicans, herons, egrets, ducks, gulls and waders in season. Migrating birds use it as a stopover on the autumn and spring routes. The wider area is home to hundreds of plant species including endemic salt-marsh halophytes.

What to do. Walk the marked trail (the loop is around 4 km, allow 90 minutes including birdwatching stops), photograph the flamingos in winter, visit Hala Sultan Tekke on the western shore. Bring binoculars (essential for serious birdwatching). The trail is mostly flat and family-friendly. There are no facilities on the trail itself — the Tekke has toilets.

Insider tips. Flamingo season is November to March. The morning light is best for photography. Avoid the trail in midday summer (no shade, salt-flat heat). The trail closest to the water can be muddy after rain — sturdy shoes sensible. Larnaca Airport is immediately north — small jets pass low overhead, sometimes appearing in flamingo photographs.

Combinations. Pair with Hala Sultan Tekke (on the western shore), with Kition archaeological site (15 minutes), Larnaca old town, and Mackenzie Beach for a contrasting afternoon. A complete Larnaca natural-and-cultural day.

Bring. Binoculars (essential), camera with telephoto if photographing birds, water, sunscreen, hat, sturdy shoes, layered clothing in winter. When. November to March for flamingos. Late autumn (after the first rains have refilled the lake) and February (peak flamingo numbers) are the best months. Larnaca Salt Lake is the unexpected wildlife spectacle of southern Cyprus and an essential complement to any winter visit.
