Hala Sultan Tekke is the principal Islamic shrine on Cyprus, sitting on the western shore of Larnaca Salt Lake, 6 km from Larnaca city. It is built around the tomb of Umm Haram (Umm Haraam bint Milhan), foster-mother of the Prophet Muhammad and one of the early companions of the Prophet, who according to tradition died at this spot in 649 AD when she fell from her mule during the first Arab raid on Cyprus. The shrine has been a Muslim pilgrimage site since the Umayyad period and is one of the four most important Islamic holy places after Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem in some traditional rankings.
The present mosque-and-tekke complex is largely Ottoman, built in stages from the late 18th century, with a single white-dome over the prayer hall and a tall minaret. The setting is the surprise — palm trees, an enclosed garden of plane and cypress, and the immense flat expanse of the salt lake stretching east, which in winter is host to thousands of greater flamingos. The tomb itself is in a small inner chamber covered with green silk and surrounded by a wooden balustrade.
The tekke is an active pilgrimage site for Cypriot Muslims and Muslim visitors from across the world. Friday prayers are well attended; the Eid festivals draw substantial congregations. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times.
Insider tips. Open daily, generally 09:00-17:00 (shorter in winter). Modest dress essential — long trousers and covered arms for everyone, headscarf for women (provided at the entrance). Shoes are removed before entering the prayer hall. Photography is permitted in the courtyard but not in the prayer hall during prayer times. Free admission; donations welcome.
Combinations. Pair with the Larnaca Salt Lake itself (the tekke sits on its western edge — winter flamingos are the headline), with the Kition archaeological site (15 minutes — Phoenician Larnaca), Larnaca old town and the Foinikoudes promenade, or with Mackenzie Beach for an afternoon. A complete Larnaca cultural day.
Bring. Modest dress, headscarf if female (or borrow), sunscreen for the open courtyard, water, camera. When. Year-round. Winter (December-February) gives the flamingos on the salt lake — a dramatic combination. Avoid Friday lunchtime if you are not attending prayers. Hala Sultan Tekke is one of the deeper layers of Cypriot religious history and an unexpectedly atmospheric setting.
