The Akamas National Park is the formally protected core of the wild north-western Akamas peninsula — a Special Conservation Area under EU Natura 2000 covering around 230 km² of rolling limestone coast, deep gorges, juniper and thyme scrub, and one of the few large undeveloped stretches of the Mediterranean coast. After decades of political wrangling, the area's status is now as a Forest National Park within the broader Akamas peninsula, with stricter protections in the most sensitive coastal zones (the green-turtle nesting beaches, the Avakas Gorge, the cape itself).
The peninsula contains a remarkable density of habitats and species. Mediterranean maquis and garrigue (juniper, thyme, sage, oregano, wild thyme), Aleppo pine forest in the higher interior, the limestone cliffs of the western and northern coasts, the gorge habitat of Avakas (with its endemic ferns and reptiles), the wetland of the salt-marshes near the cape, and the marine zone with seagrass meadows. Wildlife: mouflon (Cypriot wild sheep, endemic), foxes, hedgehogs, Bonelli's eagles, falcons, the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal in the sea-caves, and the green and loggerhead turtles nesting at Lara and Toxeftra.
What to do. Walk the marked nature trails — the Aphrodite Trail (7.5 km loop from the Baths of Aphrodite, 3-4 hours) is the most popular; the Adonis Trail is the parallel longer route. Drive the unpaved tracks (4x4 essential, especially after rain) to Lara Beach, Toxeftra, and the cape itself. Take a boat from Latchi to the Blue Lagoon for the sea-cliff perspective. Visit the Avakas Gorge for a serious 1-2 hour gorge hike between 30-metre limestone walls. Snorkel at the rocky coves.
Insider tips. A 4x4 changes the experience completely — without one, you are limited to the marked trails from the Baths of Aphrodite. Boat tours from Latchi are the easy alternative for the cape and Blue Lagoon. There are no fuel stations, minimal phone coverage, no shops in the interior — top up before you set off. Pack out everything. Respect turtle-nesting markers (June-October) — never disturb a nest, never use lights at night.
Combinations. Akamas is itself a 1-2 day destination. Use Latchi or Polis Chrysochous as the base — fish tavernas, accommodation, supplies. Combine with the Paphos coast attractions (Coral Bay, sea caves) or with Vouni Panayia winery for an interior Pafos day.
Bring. Sturdy walking shoes, 2L water per person, sunscreen, hat, snacks, swimsuit, snorkel kit, a 4x4 if going off-road, paper map, dry bag for boat tours. When. April-June and September-November are perfect; July-August midday is brutal in the gorges. Akamas is the part of Cyprus that reminds you the island is not just hotels — it is one of the wildest corners of the eastern Mediterranean still on a public road.
