Zambartas Winery

Zambartas Wineries sits in the village of Agios Amvrosios in the Limassol district, around 35 km north-west of Limassol on the southern Troodos slopes. The estate was founded in 2006 by Akis Zambartas (a US-trained oenologist whose father was the long-time chief winemaker at the historic KEO winery) and is one of the most internationally serious of the small Cypriot estates — modern equipment, careful vineyard management at 700-800 m altitude, and a focused range working both indigenous and international varieties.

The grape range is what makes Zambartas worth a visit. Xynisteri and Maratheftiko (Cyprus' indigenous white and red) are the foundation, taken seriously and given the kind of careful winemaking that justifies their potential. International varieties include Lefkada, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc. The estate's flagship is the Margelina (a Cabernet Franc-Lefkada blend) and the Maratheftiko Single Vineyard. The white Xynisteri-Semillon blend has won regional awards. Akis was an early voice in the modern Cypriot wine renaissance and the estate's house style is restrained, structured, and distinctly modern.

What to do. Tastings by appointment in the modern cellar tasting room. The standard flight is 5-7 wines, with a cellar tour and explanation of the indigenous-grape revival project. Tasting fees are around 10-15 EUR per person, usually deducted from purchases. The estate also runs occasional wine dinners and harvest events — check the website.

Insider tips. Booking essential — the estate is small and serious. Ask specifically for the single-vineyard Maratheftiko if available. The estate is on the wine route through Agios Amvrosios, Vasa and Kilani — easy to combine multiple winery visits in a day. Designated driver or pre-booked taxi essential.

Combinations. Pair with Vlassides Winery in nearby Kilani (a different style, equally serious), with Tsiakkas in Pelendri (the Pitsilia counterpart), or with Omodos wine village for lunch. A serious wine day on the southern Troodos.
