Car or Transfers in Cyprus — Cost Calculation for a 7-Day Stay
One of the first questions when planning a trip to Cyprus is: should you rent a car or not? The arguments in favor are strong — the island is small (225 km across), and without a car, it's difficult to reach the most beautiful places (Akamas, Troodos, small villages). There are also arguments for transfers — driving on the left is disorienting, parking in cities can be difficult, and if you stick to one resort, a car may be unnecessary. Here's a specific calculation below.
Option A: Renting a Car for 7 Days
Rental Costs
Car class significantly affects the price:
- Compact (e.g., Toyota Yaris, Opel Corsa): €30–45/day in season (June–August), €22–35 in off-season
- SUV/MPV (e.g., Nissan Qashqai, Ford Focus): €50–70/day in season, €40–55 off-season
- Premium Sedan (e.g., BMW 3, Mercedes C): €80–120/day in season
Insurance: Hidden costs here:
- Basic CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): usually included
- Excess (deductible) with CDW: €500–1500 — that's how much you lose from the deposit in case of an accident
- Purchase of excess cover (SCDW): €8–15/day — eliminates the risk
- Recommendation: buy SCDW or check if your credit card (e.g., Citi, mBank platinum) covers excess when renting a car
Fuel: €1.50/liter of gasoline. With 500 km per week (realistic) and 7l/100km fuel consumption: €52 of fuel.
Parking:
- City centers (Larnaka, Limassol): €0.50–1/hour, multi-story parking lots €3–6/day
- At attractions: often free or €2–3
- Hotel/apartment: check if free (usually so outside the center)
Total cost of Option A (couple, 7 days, compact, off-season):
- Rental 7 × €30 = €210
- SCDW 7 × €10 = €70
- Fuel = €52
- Parking = €25
- Total: €357 = 1535 zł for a car = 769 zł/person (couple)
What You Gain with a Car
- Full freedom: Akamas, Troodos, small villages, remote beaches
- Excursions on your own schedule (without waiting for a bus)
- Ability to do grocery shopping without a taxi
- Any changes to the plan during the trip
Option B: Airport Transfers + Buses + Taxis
Airport Transfers
From LCA (Larnaka Airport) to popular destinations:
- To Larnaka city center: Bolt €12–18, taxi €25–35
- To Limassol: taxi €50–70, private transfer €45–65, intercity bus €3.50 (but not directly from the airport)
- To Paphos: taxi €120–150 (!), private transfer €90–110, bus Larnaka center → Paphos €6 (but 2 buses and 2.5h)
- To Ayia Napa: taxi €55–80, transfer €45–65, bus €7
From PFO (Paphos Airport) to Paphos center: taxi €15–25, Bolt €10–15.
Intercity Buses (OSEA)
The intercity bus network is good for traveling between cities, but it limits you to main hubs.
